If I buy a set of HSU speakers and subwoofer and I want to hook them up directly to my computer, I was told you need to hook up an amp.

(is an amp and receiver the same thing?)

I'm not worried about the radio as I will stream Sirius live radio on my computer.

So what amp (and or receiver) is a good match for HSU speakers?

I plan on getting the Ventriloquist VT-12 speakers, because they are nice and small and I have heard are like bose, if not better.

I see they are 300 for the 5 pack speakers right? Do I then have to buy a subwoofer? Which one pairs well with the Ventriloquist?

What is this satellite speaker technology? If their not wireless, what makes them satellite speakers?

Hi agoutihead!

Many people have had good results using Onkyo receivers. Here is an example:

Even the very low priced models should work just fine!

The VT-12 are considered satellite speakers because of the nice small size. I would say that any of the subwoofers in our lineup work well with VT-12 system, including STF-1, STF-2, VTF-1, VTF-2 Mk3, etc. STF-1 is good in rooms up to about 1500 ft^3, STF-2/VTF-1 up to 3000 ft^3, VTF-2 Mk3 up to 4500 ft^3.

Sincerely,

Are Onkyo receivers expensive?

I suppose any type of receiver would work, sony would be fine wouldnt it?

How many watts do i need to get?

So is a amp the same thing as a receiver?

I wont need anything more than 1500sf for a subwoofer, is there one that does a smaller room?

No, those receivers should not be very expensive. I would strongly recommend either Onkyo or Harmon Kardon receivers (maybe you can start a new post here asking people about their experiences with these receivers). Basically, a receiver includes a built-in amplifier section in addition to various other audio/video processing features.

I would go with STF-1 for anything less than 1500 ft^3.

Hope this helps!

I just helped a friend setup his HSU sub and Ventriloquist speakers. He purchased the Onkyo TX-SR504 (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/419961-REG/Onkyo_TXSR504B_TX_SR504_Home_Theater_Receiver.html ). It has 7 channel inputs so it works great for the Ventriloquist system. I would recommend this receiver or one similar.

The problem is that if he ios going to spend $500 for a receiver get one future proof as the mighty 605 which has good reviews already(CNET) and all new dolby and DTS formats...

Since he is using a computer, he can use PowerDVD and the analog output for DTS-MA and TrueHD (with a Blu-ray or HD DVD player in the computer). He could also do the decoding with an external player in the future.

I actually output directly to an amplifier and let my computer/soundcard do all the decoding.

agoutihead,
Have you checked out the Performance Packages from HSU Research which include the speakers and the subwoofer?
