Hi,
To who has the answer...

I would like to know what are the effective radiating area diferences between

10 inch woofers?
12 inch woofers?
15 inch woofers?
18 inch woofers?
Is the effective piston area = diafragm - surround ?
Please let me know and thank you...

Hi caci,

Effective piston area (ie. Thiele-Small parameter Sd) is basically just the diameter of the diaphragm including one-half width of the surround.

DO you know where i can get the specs of the diameter of a 10",12",15",18"...?

THanks a lot for answering pete hsu...

PS.

How much cost you changing your name?....jejejejejejejajaja
Some famous people spend a fortune in changing it....jajaj

Well I wanted to do something in my username that would identify Hsu Research, and something that was pretty basic and simple too that we could standardize across our company (Pete_Hsu, Dr_Hsu, Leo_Hsu, or whoever else wants to create a user name).

Specs (Sd, etc) are generally not the same even when two different drivers are both, say, 12" drivers. It very much depends on the design of the woofer. To get an idea of some general differences, you could look at some basic specs at Velodyne's website to compare piston area with different subwoofers.

Pete_HSU:
Okay I have seen those and they practically are the ones that get me confused... because almost everywhere I see people that say that 2 12" have comparable, if not more, size area of an 18", and if I take Velodyne measurements the data does not seem true...

Can you give me more details...

caci, I would say that two 12" woofers do have comparable effective piston area compared to an 18" woofer. Maybe a tad less, but still comparable (or at least, as comparable as can be).

Two 10" have area like a 15"?
Two 8" like a 12"?

Yeah, that is basically correct!

So a standard woofer would have an effective area 20% more than those ultra long throw drivers with their 2" surrounds.

Pete,

For a second, I thought a new Hsu started working in the family business, then seeing the responses, I thought you must have recently married into the family. LOL.
