View Full Version : STF-2 sub placement in awkward room

Hi all,

First off this sub sounds amazing and blends in beautifully with my Mains (PSB Image 5Ts and 2Bs).

I live in a 1st floor apartment with a unit above me. I know the STF-2 is under-powered for a room my size (3600+ft3) but I don't want to annoy my neighbours too much and I don't need to shake the walls - just blend in nicely for music and semi-loud explosions for movies.

My couch can't really be moved because it's the only place the allows good viewing of my 84" projector screen. I have tried the sub in the 2 corners marked on the diagram. Placement near the couch sounds nice and loud on the close side but quiet on the far side. Placement in the front corner sounds more even but still louder on the corner side of the couch. I can close my bedroom doors to limit the size of the room. Also, in the picture the kitchen is open which is why the room is so big.

Is there a more optimum placement or is my room too funky? Would there be much benefit to upgrading to a VTF2-3 if I have to keep the volume reasonable? The STF-2 sounds plenty loud @ 10o'clock volume and doesn't weigh 80lbs ;). If I ever buy a house I could always upgrade again. I'll try some loud movies later today and see if the volume is sufficient.

Thanks for your help,
Jon

Have you tried the crawl test? I would think that right behind your couch or in the corner next to it would be the best places - with all other doors closed.

Hi Jon,

Try placing the STF-2 sideways directly behind the couch (in the center of the couch), and keep your room doors closed. This should provide more even bass throughout the couch, while giving great impact too.

I don't think it's completely necessary to go for VTF-2 Mk3 unless you are looking for much more ultra deep bass below 25Hz.

Sincerely,
