I hope you can help me out here. I recently stopped by and picked up a pair of the MB-1 MK2 speakers. (Still blown away by these....daily. :D )

Now I own the VTF-2 mk3 sub which is in my home theater room. I hooked it up to the MB-1's just to hear them together but I couldn't bring myself to pull the VTF2 away from my HT room. Its just a fantastic sub.

Now I own a Velodyne CT-150 sub that I decided to use with my HB-1's. This is an older sub but it still works great and sounds awesome. Not as good as the Hsu VTF2 though and thats why I'm using it with my 2 channel audio system and not my HT system.

Now I am using a Harmon/Kardon HK3490 stereo receiver which does not filter the speaker outs or the sub out for that matter. So whats happening is I get full range sound into my MB-1's as well as my sub. I don't make a habit of turning my HK up way loud and so far the MB-1's have been wonderful.

My question is this:

Should I run my speaker wires from my HK to the sub and then from the sub to the Hsu MB-1's using the Velodynes crossover? I could then set the Velodyne at 80Hz and up for the speakers. Do you think this would be the best setup?

Running full range these speakers sound amazing and my sub takes care of the low end nicely but I'm wondering if I'm doing this wrong in your opinion?

I appreciate any help.

Thanks,

Charles

Hi Charles,

Thank you for the compliments about the HB-1 MK2's and the VTF-2 MK3, both really great products!

When feeding the high level inputs on your Velodyne, and using the outputs back to the main speakers, is there anything that the Velodyne amp does to filter out lower frequencies going to the main speakers?

Thanks

Yeah there is a high pass filter switch that allows me to select 100 or 80Hz. I'd keep it at 80 Hz if I were to use it. Ultimately I want my HB-1's to sound their best matched with this sub. It bums me out that my HK doesn't filter anything.

I had the same problem when I had the HK3490 hooked up to my Hsu speakers. Sad there is no bass management on an otherwise great receiver. Your lucky your sub has a high pass filter, that's not a feature on a lot of subs. You would have had to buy a HP filter otherwise.

Thanks Charles, feel free to make use of the 80Hz high pass filter. You will have a bit lower distortion and wider dynamic range by using the HPF.

Okay; running the MB-1's through the sub and all is great. These speakers trully amaze even without a sub. But with a sub? Shockingly good. I think this is the best buy I've made for my stereo system so far. And to think I was going to continue running my Polk M40's.

It's been awhile and if there is such a thing as a break in period I'm well past it.

These speakers still put a huge smile on my face. These days I tend to have my Grado's on to make the family happy but when I can crank the Hsu speakers up I am truly amazed each and every time. They simply blow away everything else I have heard.
