TN1220 placed in a "cubby"?

I am starting to build my HT into my new basement. I happen to have a narrow, 18" space or "cubby" near the front of my room. My TN1220 fits perfectly in the gap. See the attached picture.

The overall room is roughly 12 ft by 25ft (it is not perfectly rectangular, with several walls and partial partitions that block into the room).

I have started to use REW (Room EQ Wizard) to map out the acoustics for the room. So far, with limited testing, the TN in the cubby measures acoustically similar to just putting the TN in the front right corner.

Are there any issues I should consider with putting the TN into the recessed cubby in my room?

See the attached graph. Note that this is in an untreated room.

Line on top is in the corner. Line on the bottom is sub in the cubby. I am not overly concerned that the cubby measures lower in output. I have a fair amount of power and I don't play my music/movies overly loud.

Graph is of the Sub only. No mains. I will be crossing the sub at 100hz which in the graph is not turned on.

I have a BFD and can deal with the peaks with EQ.

I am not sure what to do with the 45hz null.

Given the measurements, is the cubby going to be a problem?

Hi dmass,

Would it be possible for you to try positioning the TN on it's side in the nearfield position (say, behind the couch)?

Right now I'd say that the corner position definitely seems better. What are you subjective impressions of corner vs cubby?

near field is not likely an option for the TN. I will have two sofa's and a riser in that area of the room. I could maybe put it behind the second row sofa/riser area....Putting the TN on the floor about 6 ft behind the main first row sofa. Possibly the MBM could open other options...But I don't have one (yet!).

My main question is that will the cubby that measures 16" wide by 90" high cause any accoustic issues for bass freqs? I know that it measures a bit better in the front corner, but cosmetically it works better to put it in the cubby.

I don't have the rest of my system up yet to do true listening tests. Look a good bass freak...I am placing the sub first and trying to engineer the room around it.

Use an extra long length of speaker cable and try/measure a few different locations. (remember to recalibrate in each location). Many find it tiresome to systematically find the best location with all the measuring involved, but it pays off by rewarding you with better balance. As you have shown you have "anomalies" in your cubby positioning where I think you will get a far better balance by being out of that recess.

As others mention near field location works excellent, this is especially so with the very clean sounding TN1220HO. I believe nearfield would work the best in your room.
