I read a very interesting article: http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/volume_10_2/ultralink-CL414-cable-5-2003.html

It goes beyond my electrical understanding, but it seems to make sense. Does anyone out there know if there is merit to the idea that a doubled up 14awg would be preferable to a 12 awg. I know HSU recommends that only 16awg is needed for shorter runs, then 14awg, etc.

Should I really save my money and just go with 16 gauge if all my runs are short, or would there be some benefit to using a 14 or 12 gauge or a 14-2 as this article suggests?

Go to Home Depot and buy the GE 14 ga. 100 ft. roll wire for around $30 or so. The cover is clear and the wire is oxy free for +, and regular wire for -. Thats what I used for my surrounds and made 80 foot runs with it. Lowes might carry it too. If you want excellent speaker cables for your mains and center, go to Blue Jeans Cable. They have a good selection and they won't break your pocketbook.

Here are some great prices on speaker cable, I just ordered 50 Ft of 12 Gauge for only $12, 100 Ft is $25.

Also 100 Ft of 14 Gauge is only $22, they also sell many other cables dirt cheap, such as a 6 Ft HDMI for only $15, check them out.

When you double up the 14/4 wire all you are doing is lowering the resistance that equal to 11ga wire. I did this very same thing with my Hsu system. I never set out to do so but the place I bought the wire from was out of 14/2 wire.
