View Full Version : Major differences between VTF2 MK3 vs VTF3 MK2?

I going to buy one of these:
I have an opportunity to buy on craig list a used VTF3 MK2 for 450 USD or
VTF2 MK3 on site 552 (499 + 53 Del).

I am debating on spending extra ~100 for new vs used.

Are there any major differences other than being able to play louder?

Thanks for any response.

Regards,
Keith P.

Both are similar in performance. The VTF-3 Mk2 has a bit more powerful amplifier, while the latest Mk3 series has a bit flatter response. You probably can't go wrong either way.

Hope this helps!

What do you mean by the statement that the VTF-2 MK3 has a bit flatter response than the VTF-3 MK2? I am a Canadian customer so am considering the purchase of a used VTF-3 MK2 (in Canada), which will end up being cheaper especially when shipping / taxes / brokerage on the new unit are considered.

I am also considering the purchase of a (new) MBM-12 to complement the full range subwoofer. My room is modest in size, 12.5(width)X16.5(length)X8(height), 1650 ft3. The full range subwoofer will be in the front left corner and the MBM-12 will be in the right back corner (fairly close to the main seating area). Will either of these subwoofers with the MBM-12 work OK with my setup?

Pete, my understanding is that both units have downward firing woofers. Is this correct?

I would have considered a VTF-3 MK3, however the subwoofer will sit with the side firing woofer directly beside my turntable setup, :( .

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

PS: I currently own a VTF-2 MK2.

Hi shh,

I just mean that for the latest VTF subwoofers, we have flattened out the response a bit. So the current VTF-2 Mk3 in extended bass mode has a frequency response that measures something like +/- 0.5db from 16-200Hz when measured outside. However, the VTF-3 Mk2 is a bit more powerful in terms of maximum output due to the more powerful amplifier that it uses.

In your case, I'd probably go with a VTF-3 Mk2 used. It's a great sub, and has higher headroom too than the -2 Mk3.

MBM-12 should work well in your room. Note that all of our subwoofers other than the VTF-3 Mk3 and VTF-3 HO have downfiring woofers.

Thanks.

What is your current ETA for the MBM-12?

I think we should be getting them by mid-February.

Pete:

One other question about the MBM-12.

Since I live in Canada, I have a question about warranty repair.

If (in the rare case) a problem is found with the amplifier, does the whole subwoofer have to be shipped back for repair.

Or is it fairly straightforward to remove the backplate/amplifier and only ship back that portion of the unit. Is it simply a case of removing some screws and detaching speaker terminal wire lugs OR is it necessary to cut/unsolder wires to separate the backplate/amplifier unit?

Finally I may be visiting a friend in the US. If the unit was shipped to his place in Florida, how many days does it take to reach him (assuming that the unit is in stock).

Thanks

Steve

Hi Steve,

In the event that the amp needs to be repaired, you will only need to send the amplifier back to us. It's pretty straightforward, just remove the outer (ie. perimeter) screws on the plate amplifier, and then remove the speaker wires from the woofer by depressing the locking tabs.

Shipping to FL normally takes about 4-5 business days.

Pete:

Thanks. That is the answer that I was hoping to hear. Once the MBM-12's are back in stock, I will be placing an order.
