Dear Dr. Hsu & forum Expert's,

I'm a proud owner of a used VTF-3 MKIII (couple of months old) and new TurboCharger. Bought it from a friend who's upgrading to multiple 15" Sub's.
Friend of mine bought the Turbo Charger but ended up never use it because he told me he never needed it.
I'm new to HT (go easy & slow on me :( :D ), but I’m somehow familiar a bit on this subject as I'm coming from CarAudio. I'm moving out from CarAudio after 2 break-in's (even with alarm) and the last major break-in cost me a lot where my Rainbow's speakers (run active), Alpine H701 pro. & Audison Amps all were taken. Not to mention my car insurance increase.

Here are few "side" questions I have before I go to my main questions: -
1) A friend bought an extended 5-years warranty when he purchase the VTF-MRIII & Turbocharger. I believe this extended warranty is for the electronics? Is the extended warranty and the original warranty (driver) transferable?

2) A friend of mine also told me that Dr. Hsu who design this subs originate from the same country i was born, raise and educate, in Singapore, before moving to US. Is this correct?

Below are the main questions that I need help and recommendation.
I'm placing or set-up my HT in the living area. I have an odd size home, in-term of placement anyway. I'm attaching the plan layout of my home on the first floor. Assuming i close all the bedrooms and all other rooms/garage on the first floor and second floor, the living area is open to kitchen and stairs up to the second floor "open" loft/Study room, vaulted slope ceiling from the second floor all the way to first floor, I'm having about 6810 ft^3 or maybe 7000 ft^3.

The whole house have floating laminate flooring, living room, staircase, rooms, etc.... kitchen, entrance * bathroom are marble. No carpet at all accept rugs on the living room and bathroom?

Here i derive my calculation: -
1st floor : 454 ft^2 x 9' wall height = 4086 ft^3
2nd floor : 454 ft^2 x 8' wall height = 3632 ft^3 x 3/4 (because of slope ceiling towards the living area-estimate) = 2724 ft^3
Total : 4086 + 2724 = 6810 ft^3.

Here an overall look drawings on part of my house, showing the living area on the first floor and "open" to the second floor.

And here is the plan view:

If you look at below picture, i do not have space to place the VTF-3 MKIII on the front or next to the main front speakers. My first thought was to place them at the 5th staircase where there a space between the stairs after the 5th staircase at the turn before going all the way up to the second floor. That would block some of staircase and Wife won't agree to that location.

So, I’ve decided to place them next to the couch. The couch is flush with the back wall. Surround speakers are on top. See picture below. The distance between the wall-mount TV and the back-wall is about 13'6" and the distance between the side walls is 13'6", ofcourse there's opening to the kitchen on the left and opening to the doors and some other rooms doors right from the picture below u see.

Questions: -
1) Should i flush the subwoofer against the left wall or flush with the couch on the right? The port will be facing the back-wall/windows with curtain and the driver will be facing the couch. If i flush the sub close to the couch, it will block the driver? If i flush the sub to the left wall, the driver have space between the couch. Where is the ideal place in this set-up?

2) If the ports are firing to the back-wall/windows with curtain, what's the minimum space i should give between the ports and the back-wall/windows with curtain? Or should i aim the ports firing towards the couch or left wall on the picture?

3) I have the turbocharger for this sub, should i use it? What benefit do i have with the turbocharger and how/where i should place my subwoofer with TurboCharger on my current limited set-up/placement? And where should i aim the port now on the Turbocharger?

I do apologize for the long winded explanations & questions, as I’m trying to explain the best i can.
Thank you in advance,

Regards,
Nizee.

Hi Nizee,

I would place the VTF-3 Mk3 in the nearfield corner where you have it shown in the picture. Just make sure to give at least 3-4" of space for the rear-firing ports to fire. The woofer only needs a couple inches of space, and this won't be a problem because the woofer is on the right hand side of the unit (when looking at the front face). My preference would be to run the unit in max output mode (ie. both ports open, no turbo) most of the time. Only with pipe organ music or other ultra deep bass content will it be beneficial to run with turbocharger. As for the warranty, I'll have to look into details on the transferrable warranty, and will get back to you when I find out more.

And yes, Dr. Hsu is from Singapore, thanks for asking!

Sincerely,

nizee

Thanks for the prompt reply Pete. Appreciate it.

Since the total volume this sub would see is 6810 ft^3 and the VTF-3 MRIII cover 6000 ft^3, I was told that the TurboCharger would increase the output, but i guess i'm wrong then? Will placement near seating positions do justice? or i need another Sub?

Will any of these placement works too?

Sub near the couch, Driver cone have about 3"~4" firing directly at the couch.

Sub at the other end, driver cone have about 7 1/2 ft (but kinda rectangular area - see picture) firing directly at the entrance door.

Also, let me know if you already find out about the warranty.

Hey nizee,

It would be just fine to use the subwoofer as an endtable on the side of the couch. I would go with the position where the woofer is firing into the couch.

We have a limited transferrable warranty where the remainder of the base warranty (2 years on amplifier, 7 years on woofer) is trasferred to the next owner. Sorry, extended warranty is not transferrable.

Sincerely,
