View Full Version : Headphones + subwoofers?

At the moment, my entire audio system consists of a PC and headphones -- which is better than a sharp stick in the eye, but not much.

I am contemplating a strategy to build an apartment-scale, moderately budgeted audio and home theater system in stages, using best-of-breed components within my price range.

It occurs to me that perhaps the first thing to buy is a quality subwoofer (I'm thinking VTF-2), to be used only with headphones until I am ready to buy a receiver and main speakers. (I know the main speakers eventually will be more satisfying than headphones, but the "cans" are just Stage 1.)

Strange as this idea may seem, it appears to me that the subwoofer would be quite complementary, providing one of the most-missed properties of headphone listening: some visceral bass. If I use a pair of "open" headphones, the bass would reach my ears as well as my bowels. (The other property I miss most is spatial realism.)

I've searched around, but can't find anyone doing this, which causes me to suspect that my idea is less than fully baked. What does anyone think?
