View Full Version : Confused - VTF FAQ's

I noticed that in the FAQ's for the VTF when talking about deeper extension and high output modes, it describes it the opposite of what I think I've seen it discussed, and from what I thought sounded right.
Example:
VTF – Variable Tuning Frequency. The bass characteristics can be varied between lower extension (‘music’ mode) or higher headroom (‘home theater’ mode).
My understanding was that the HT mode was the lower extension and "higher headroom" was really for music for that harder hit and higher volume.
Was I confused? :D If so, if one is primarily for HT, the high output mode is really where it should be?

It actually is whatever you prefer. Just try each one and see.
I personally tend to keep it in Max Output mode for both but others do just the opposite. It's all a matter of personal preference.

I actually don't completely agree with that description anymore. In the past, many years ago, it was true that movies had very little content below 25Hz, while some music like pipe organ music had significant deep bass content. So that description was more or less correct many years ago. In today's day and age, there are many examples of movies and music that have significant deep bass content, while many others still don't have very much deep bass content. On that note, in some instances one will be better off running in max output mode, and in other instances one will be better off running in max extension mode, depending on the particular music or movie source material.

When talking mainstream music (i.e. anything but pipe organ) its always been the other way around to the HSU FAQ description.
Movies (especially blockbuster action movies) have always had artificial special effects that do dip below 25Hz. Of course the reality is that even in these movies this sort of freq is only for a few microseconds. Now the expectations (of different listeners) on the level and extent of how the soundtrack was mixed (and balanced) is a whole variable argument that is best left up to each person to discover/experiment with.
