View Full Version : HSU VTF-2 Sub?

I have been thinking of buying a HSU sub for some time now (subless for 3 years) and have been looking at the VTF-2 MK3 sub. I mainly watch movies and a little music... but want that cinema quality rumble when watching movies.

Anyways, I just moved into a new house and the family room is about 3200 cubic feet. Can I assume the VTF2 won't be too much for this room? I am currently using an ONKYO SR606 receiver and 8 year old sony dreamsystem speakers that are 8 years old ( I know speakers need upgraded bad).

Thanks

The HSU VTF2mk3 will be perfect for your room. My room is just little bit larger in volume and this sub shakes everything when called for. In fact this past weekend I watched the Lord of the Rings and I had a herd of Elephants running through my living room. It was awesome.

I think you would be quite happy with that choice.

Nice man. I use the Z-line Venetian X (3 in 1).

What about other HSU speaker deals? The room is 17x18 and was told that 7.1 will be overwhelming for a room that size and shape.. I was thinking of getting either the enthusiast 2 or 3 HSU system and doing ceiling mounts (only way I can do it cleanly). With the 7.1 be overwhelming for this size/shape room?

It won't be overwhelming, although I am pretty iffy on the need for rear speakers on a 7.1 setup. I don't think it will get you any significant advantage over 5.1. You would be better off putting that extra money into an upgraded sub rather than the extra speakers.

I definately agree with you.

There is so little material recorded for 7 speaker systems(aka 7.1) , that the user basically is throwing away money.

I love the stand...except now that my daughter moves around she likes to push buttons....and I haven't quite figured out how to keep her from doing it. Other than that I love the stand.

I would rather have dual VTF2's (or duals any sub for that matter) and 5.1 system then 7.1 with one sub.

First off let Me say I am a first time buyer of HSU products and I am extremely impressed with what they have to offer in terms of bass quality and output... I would like to know if it would be safe for Me to turn My sub gain up to about 40% after I break in the sub, currently I am running the sub at 25% and I am getting a good amount of output and tightness but I would like a little more of an impact to the chest when there is a bass scene. The settings on the sub and receiver;
- LFE input (Single Connection)
- Volume at about 25%
- Phase Switch at 0 Degrees
- 1 port open & 1 sealed
- Bass Extension Switch down
- CrossOver to 0 since I'm only using LFE single connection
- CrossOver Switch to Out and I have the settings on My receiver at 80Hz
- The Sub Channel is at +3dB, goes from -15dB to +15dB settings
- Usual Listening volume is about 55-60 for Movies and 45 for games, goes
from 0-80 and its a Pioneer VSX 820K Receiver
If anyone can also please recommend other alternatives setting I would appreciate it. Thx

Looking at your current settings (BTW excellent info provided) you could turn up your subwoofer some more since your sub channel in the AVR is +3. Go ahead now and raise the volume on the sub to 40% and rerun the auto calibration. I find with most subs they work their best at a -1 or -2 AVR subwoofer level trim. You do not have to worry about the break in period.

Then sit back and rediscover your movie collection.

Yes and no. I am answering from experience since I use to install HT systems for a living. I have not work with the VTF2 per se but I recently installed a VTF3. Very similar subs. I based my advise on the excellent info you provided and that is all I can go on. Also cacihome agreed with my advise and he has own more of the Hsu subs then me but I have installed Hsu subs, Velodynes, Paradigms, JL Audio and a variety of other well know subs. You will not hurt the sub at all changing the volume on the sub from 30% to 40%. Now if you turn the volume to 75% that could damage the sub.

For some other alternative settings I am sure Pete will be by later this evening with some of his recommendations. Congrats on your new sub. :)

Mine is 3,100 cufeet and I have a VTF-15H....so I think you will be fine with yours.

If money is not a problem. You can check out the VTF3 Mk3 too...HHHAHAAHA

I jus recently purchase the vtf2 mk3 and Im very happy with it but I am looking to purchase VTF-15H... I guess My question is the VTF-15H just as musical as the vtf2 mk3 can hit every bass beat with a punch and accuracy from My experience I have had subs with 15 in drivers but they seem to get a lil sloppy bcuz the large driver size can't move as fast as the 10-12in drivers... I was thinking of getting the VTF-15H for My finished basement and being that it's gonna b on concrete floors I can use the extra output but without sacraficing all the things I like about the VTF2 or My second choice is getting a VTF3 for My basement... Plz let Me know... Thx

The VTF-15 has at least same/better SQ as a VTF-1/VTF-2MK3/VTF-3 MK3 in its ported mode at lower freqs.

At higher freqs, the VTF-15 is a lot tighter/punchier.

They are both very good in SQ, it is only in sealed mode I can confidently say the VTF-15H has a significant edge.

The ULS is the best sounding sub in the line though.

The myth about the size of the driver is no longer valid. The 15" drivers in the Hsu subwoofers are as fast as any 10-12" drivers. If I was you and I was going to get another sub for my basement with concrete floors I would also decide on buying the VTF-15. So if you can afford the VTF-15 then that would be the best choice. :)

Thx for Ur opinion... I have My last sub was a MartinLogan Dynamo 700 (Sealed 10inch 300w RMS 600w peak) and I was very impressed with it's SQ which was very tight and articulate able to hit e every bass beat but where it shines more Music Lovers it lacked in the output... I wuld Much rather go with the Hybrid vs the ULS based solely on the fact for My finished basement I will need the output which the Hybrid will b able to deliver more thn the ULS.... I personally am more of a movie buff and a gamer and rarely do I listen to music on HTS setup... So in tht respect to My needs (Finished basement, concrete floors, listening and use Preference) wuld the Hybrid b the better fit over the ULS models??? Thx

I read on a forum that when You purchase a VTF2 MK3 it also includes a HSU cd, I'm not sure if it was for splaing a wide range of Hz tones or wht to calibrate the sub....So when I received My VTF2 and I saw there was no disc I was a lil dissappointed... Any1 have any thoughts on this???

Did you check the packaging slip on the outside of the box? That is where they are usually. Also are you outside of the USA? Hsu isn't authorized to ship those outside of the country, they do not own the rights to that music, so I believe they won't include that disc in international orders.
