View Full Version : VTF-2 won't turn back on

Using HK AVR-525 and VTF-2 with Axiom M-22s. Am wondering if it's the receiver or problems with my VTF-2 where the VTF-2 will not turn back on, e.g. green LED light-up, after auto shut-off. Haven't hooked up the VTF-2 until recently.
Only way to get it working again is to turn off VTF-2, disconnect the audio cable, turn the VTF-2 on (where LED now green), turn the VTF-2 off and and re-connect the audio cable. Just turning the VTF-2 off and then back on doesn't seem to be working, e.g. LED still red. Or even disconnecting the audio cable and then turning the VTF-2 on. It needs the audio cable to be disconnected and then re-connected. Am using the audio cable supplied with the VTF-2.
Any ideas?

I've got the complete oposite problem :)
Mine wont go into "standby" mode. Only if i disconnect the RCA (audio) feed from the back of the sub will it sometimes go into standby.
I was going to contact the distributor i got it from (here in Australia) but after someone else posted (on this forum) posted their measured power consumption figures of the VTF-2 "at idle" being 9watts for US voltage, and he calculated around 4.5watts for the 240volt we have here, i thort why bother, half the other stuff in standby probably useless that, or close to.
It does seem that "auto on/off" problems may be common though?

Spoonfed------ I would either get a solution to this problem or take the sub back for one that works------- on any new sub you shouldn't have to manualy do what the sub is supposed to do. The main reason that I got a Hsu in the first place is because people on the forums said that Hsu stood behind their products. And they have several very high ratings by independant home theater experts. I have no complaints so far--- the sub sounds great ---- I've seen a few posts where people said that it wasn't loud enough-- it can't be the same sub that I have because I had to back it off -- we thought that it was set low enough until we watched our first dvd--- an explosion on the movie sent our cat into the ceiling fan--- I think that this sub is great ---- I just want it to work the way it is supposed to. rex

The problem with any auto curcuit is that if the input voltage drops off the sub can slip into sleep mode after a period. Or if the voltage is low from the source it often refuses to turn on unless its a big enough burst. I listen to a whole lot of stuff where you have long periods of talking or no bass activity, and my subs where often slipping into sleep mode so that then I would miss the start of the bass when it starts up again. That to me is very annoying and why I bypassed my VTF-3 and VTF2s auto curcuit.
I would rather turn my system on and know its on rather than relying on auto on/off curcuits. In theory they are good but unless your running your input level really hot (depends on the output source) its more trouble than its worth. I would rather not be running back and forth to look at the light on the back of the sub because I am wondering if the sub switched on or not. I know they are on because I turn it on when I turn on everything else to use my system. No doubts and if your playing low levels the sub remains on.

I will email the supplier.
Only problem is his in Perth Western Australia (ie far west Aust) an im in Brisbane (far east Aust) which is probably as far further from each coast of the US :) So its not like a "take it down for a quick look" it send it away and then cry without it for a while ;)

well what some people have stated on what to do is try this. Try to raise the sub level from 0db and try to move it up to 2.0 on your receiver and see if the light turns gree. I had similar problems but only with sattelite tv I never have problems with dvd movies or music. Have you tired turning your dvd player on and puttign some music to see if it turns on if it doesnt then you most probably have somethign wrong with your hsu sub. Try this what i tell you and let me know you can raise the sub level in the receiver up and slightly turn the sub volume for the sub a little down to compensate.

Just pop-in a music disc(with Bass) and your ready to-Go, at lease that's what I did! PPd

The original VTF-2s auto-on feature is sensitive to signals that are either too loud or too quiet. I have a few troubleshooting steps to try before calling us.
Getting the subwoofer to turn on:
It is critical that the receiver have the left, right, and center speakers to SMALL. This will send their bass to the subwoofer. Without this, 2 channel materials will not send any bass to turn on the subwoofer.
Also, some receivers have a very quiet subwoofer output. You need to try raising the subwoofer level of the receiver, and then turn down the subwoofer level on the subwoofer.
Getting the subwoofer to turn off:
As far as it not turning off...sometimes a ground loop can be sending too much noise to the subwoofer and keeping it on. Getting a ground loop isolator at Parts Express can help. Also, the VTF-2 (original, not MK 2) had a very long 30 minute wait time before shutting off.

I pulled the plug when in standby mode (vtf3 mk2, purchased july 2005), reconnected with new receiver and turned back on, no lights and no power, tried new fuse (old fuse looked fine) and different power cord, still nothing (no lights).
Anyone else experience this problem?

So your sub is not working anymore? It is under warranty, so send the amp in if you are not able to resolve the issue with tech support.

Yes, sub not working. You do not realize how much it really does, untill it's gone. I sent it back to the dealer here in Toronto, I imagine they will send it back to the factory. :-(

Congratulations are due to Hsu Research!
I had a problem with my VTF3 MKII, RECEIVED A NEW REPLACEMENT UNIT WITHIN 2 BUSINESS DAYS, thank you, also Great Metropolitan Sound (Toronto dealer) deserves credit for how well they responded.
You really do not know what you have untill it's gone!

By replacement I mean new amp and crossover, nonetheless what more can a guy ask for? My foundation is moving again!
