I recently purchased an STF-2 sub from comp usa (many stores have stock of it now.)

My current gear is:

HK AVR-125
Axiom M3Ti Fronts
Axiom VP100 Center
No name surrounds
STF-2 Sub - crossover set to "out"
All speakers set to small

Problem is, the HK receivers crossover is 100hz and can not be changed. According to the manual, with sub output on, 100Hz and smaller will be directed to the sub only, and NOT to the fronts. I realize the 100hz is not an absolute barrier, but is this going to present a large problem?

I set the sub up last night with the radio shack sound pressure meter and the avia test disc.

It sounds OK, but something seems to be missing. Do those in the know think I need to upgrade my receiver so that I can adjust the xover settings to 80Hz?

If your front speakers are basically full range you can set them to large. That way only the center channel and surrounds will have their frequencies below 100 Hz sent to the subwoofer. This may help give a fuller sound, but you will miss out on some bass (though most of the deepest bass goes to the LFE anyway)

Of course all of the LFE efects will go the subwoofer, but that is what you want.

I think you should keep your receiver if you are happy with it. The difference between 80 and 100 hz is pretty hard to hear, at least for me. I believe the crossover on my reciever is either 90 or 100 hz also. Make sure your main speakers are getting full range and not crossed over, I have my Front and Rears set to large. Also you could use the crossover on the sub, ive tried both and it sounds better to me with the Xover engaged. My gear is 6.1 surround

Yamaha RXV-3000
Boston V940 Main
Boston V940 Rear
Boston CRC Front Center
Boston CRC Rear Center

STF-2 sub which I think is awesome for the money. By the way I purchased mine from Compusa for 349 about 3 weeks ago and havent had any problems with it or the seal. You mentioned your setup sounded "ok" Did you like it before the sub? I have compared this sub to some costing up to $1500 at high end stores and it hangs with or kicks the butt out of all of them except look wise. If your not happy I would guess something is wrong.

Thanks for the replies. I had not thought of putting the front and rears to large. Ill give that a shot and see how it goes. Im guessing for movies it will work out well as the low stuff goes to LFE. Im a bit concerned for music however, since there is no "LFE" in music per se.
