Peter, Craigsub said on his forum: I also talked to Peter from Hsu, and their VTF-3 Mark 3 is now a different animal, too, compared to the one I got 2 years ago.

What are the changes and when was it done?

Hi Bill,

The frequency response on all of our VTF subwoofers is now even flatter compared to the older VTF subwoofers that were introduced 1.5 years ago (including original VTF-1, VTF-2 MK3/VTF-3 MK3/VTF-3 HO). I'm not entirely sure when this was done, but has been in production for at least the last six months.

Sincerely,

Is there any benefit to upgrading my exsiting 3.3 Turbo and is there more bottom end?

Hey Bill,

I don't think it would be worthwhile to swap out your -3 MK3...

I have my VTF-3 HO last Dec 2007 does it have the new frequency response? I just want to be sure.:)

Definitely ilonggo, the units sold in Dec '07 would have the ultra-flat frequency response, including the HO!

I got my 3.3 Turbo in April '07. Any chance that it had the upgrade?

Probably not by then Bill. Maybe closer to the middle of the year. Don't sweat it though, the headroom on your unit is still just as good, even if response is not quite as ultra-linear in comparison.

Hello Pete,

I purchased my first 3.3 in November 2007 and the second a month after. Are these the newer versions?

Anyone?

Hi Bori,

Yes, those would be the latest version.

If you purchased after September 23, 2007, it is extremely likely that you have the new model. If you purchased in the the month or two prior to September 23, 2007, it is still possible that you have the new model. If you have never purchased a subwoofer in the VTF line, buy one now to be assured of getting the new model! :D

'Ultra' linear response only happens in a lab. Real world room acoustics make ALL subs non-linear and there is no way around it. The best you can do is add a DSP inline to tame the peaks. If you are referring to 'ultra' linear with respect to magnet motor voice coil movement (ala XBL^2) then we are talking distortion figures. Our ears cannot detect a difference in distortion between .001 and 20% THD at 20Hz so there is no benefit there either...

To the extent that a subwoofer is more linear when measured outside, it will remain more linear when placed in-room too (especially above the frequency where one starts to see room gain). Sure room modes will always wreck havok on the in-room frequency response too, but that is a separate issue altogether.

What happens to any speaker when we put it into a chosen room (as far as what we hear) dramatically changes from one room to another. After many years of getting a better understanding of room acoustics its obvious to me that more SQ gains can be made in this area than just sinking more dollars into acquiring the latest greatest components. If you ever get the chance to get into a really good (well designed) mixing studio have a listen to some tracks you know well ...... then take a look at their equipment (amps, speakers, cables etc). You will never believe what equipment they run and yet "if its one of the better designed studios" what you wont be hearing is the room. A bad room can make even the best of gear sound very ordinary .... no matter how much you tweak. (one listen at the many CES hotel room demos soon tells you that).
