I posted this on AVSforum but wanted to add it here. I do have a couple of questions below that were not asked on AVSforum.

Received my MBM yesterday, balanced the 3 3 T and MBM vis SPL meter but have not reran Audessy. Gain on 3 3 T set to 10:00 clock and MBM set to 12:00 clock. MBM is behind the couch and 3 3 T is in front left corner. Denon receiver crossover set to 80hz, 3 3 T crossover in set at 50hz.

First impressions so far are, a more balanced bass and significant mid bass improvements.

MBM blends very well with bass not being directional.

Couch vibrates like mad.

Not sure what is meant by increased overhead but what I notice is I can increase my volume on the receiver at much higher levels and the sound is clear and not uncormfortable to listen to.

I usually takes 2 or 3 days of listening to better access changes. I will report back once I rerun Audessy and get more listening time.

I am very pleased with the improvement by adding the MBM.

Questions:
With the 3 3 T 14 feet from listening position, gain set to 10:00 oclock and MBM behind the couch about 3-4 feet from me the gain is set to 12:00 oclock. Does this sound about right to have the MBM gain set at mid point?

I have MBM behind the couch with amp and front port running parallel with back of couch, is this correct?

I have the crossover on AVR at 80 hz, is this correct?

I used a test tone on the receiver using SPL meter with MDM off and getting 80db from 3 3 T then turned off 3 3 T and switched on MDM and adjusted gain until it reached 80db, is this correct?

What do people mean when they refer headroom ?

Thanks,

thsmith

Pete, where are you ? Selling lots of subs/MBMs and providing excellent customer support I suspect but when you have time could you look at my questions and just confirm if I am on track or not.

Loving the 3 3 T and MBM. Concern is my wife has not raised any stink on the MBM arriving, I figure its best to beg for forgiveness than ask permission, besides I DESERVE IT :) . So she is either going to dump on me soon or she making her own purchases I am not aware of, thankfully its usually fabric or Fiesta dishes.

Thanks,

Thanks,

The settings on your -3 MK3 and MBM-12 seem fine, and everything else you mentioned is great, including having MBM sideways behind couch with 80Hz crossover point.

Headroom is just a general term used to describe how much more output capability a subwoofer has until it reaches it's limits. So higher headroom just means that the subwoofer can play to higher output levels while still sounding clean and undistorted.

Hey Tracy!

The settings on your -3 MK3 and MBM-12 seem fine, although one alternative is to set the volume knob on the MBM somewhere between 9 and 10 o'clock and then adjust the subwoofer channel level through the receiver a bit until you get to the desired output levels. Everything else you mentioned is great, including having MBM sideways behind couch with 80Hz crossover point.

Sincerely,

Pete, why wouldn't you set the reciever level at "0", then adjust the sub me to the desired metered spl?

Sorry, I mispoke there. Actually, the best strategy to use is to start with the volume on the VTF-3 MK3 at ~ 10 o'clock, and then adjust the MBM-12 volume knob so that it sounds tight and not boomy. So Tracy has it right more or less. And then, to get the MBM-12 + VTF-3 MK3 in line with the main speakers, the subwoofer channel level through the receiver can be adjusted up or down.
