View Full Version : STF-1 not working?

I just got my STF-1 and can't get any sound from it. There seems to be power going through it according to the "on" green led so that checks out.
I connected it to my Denon 3803 via the sub out jack using a better cables cable.
I tried setting:
* the front speakers to both small and large
* cross on the 3803 to 80 and 60
* cross on STF to 80, then 60 as well
* the sub output signal to +15db (default on the the 3803)
* LFE and then LFE+main
No luck. :(
Wanting to take the guesswork out of the Hz of the signal I then tried the test signal from the 3803. Front L/R worked but when I tried the sub signal no luck again.
Then I tried a different rca cable (a standard stereo cable...just used the red one) and nothing.
I hope this is just a settings issue but I've tried every combination I can find. Please advise....

set the crossover switch on the sub to "out"
don't know much about your receiver...but make sure it knows the sub should be used.
LFE+mains should be correct.
And you tried the gain/volume knob on the sub, right?

1) Try running a singal directly from a DVD players LEFT or RIGHT output to the subwoofer.
2) Turn the CROSSOVER switch to IN.
Then play some material.
If you hear nothing, then us at 1-714-666-9260, as for tech support, and tell them your troubleshooting steps.
If you hear something, than the problem lies with the other components somehow. First lets see if it is the subwoofer.

Hi Curtis...
Tried both in and out on the stf cross switch and there is no question that my reciever has the sub set to on (checked it a dozen times) Also tried the volume knob all the way up and still nothing.

Tech support was helpful and we found the problem. Apparently during shipping one of the wires inside the sub came loose (the red lead to the woofer). After reconnecting it, the sub worked fine. However, since I'm not comfortable not knowing how big a "drop" the sub took to jar the wire loose, I asked for a new replacement and they are sending it out this week.

Great!
Have you ask your neighbors if they can hear anything?

I don't know them so I assume they will "let me know". ;)
So far it sounds good but I have to get used to the boominess. I've been listening to the Weberns for over a month now and it feels strange. Will post more as I tweak...

yeah...you will need to tweak a bit.
Hope it doesn't sound boomy though.

It seems to lack "punch" (I don't mean couch shake). It's more like low tones/hums. I have it about 8" from the wall in the corner and the cross switch set to out. Receiver set to LFE+main, cross at 60, fronts set to large. My theory is that I want the weberns to do as much as possible for several reasons, e.g., they are high end speakers and should be utilized accordingly.
Will try to move it closer to the wall to see if it creates a bit more punch. Maybe try 80 on the cross...the webs' range is 60-25KHz.

with the fronts set to large, that means you are doubling the bass signals...what goes to the sub is also going to the mains.
I would try 80hz crossover and fronts to small.
Lack of punch may also be a placement issue.

It's not so much that I'm getting too much bass.... it is that the bass that I'm getting seems "soft".

hmmm...I wonder if that might be because they are playing deeper than what you are used to?
Then again, maybe the replacement will sound better.

It's probably the former....
I have a thread on the avs forum (speakers) about sub bass characteristics vs. full range speaker woofer bass characteristics. Will be interesting to see the replies...

Hey, I received my new STF-1 And Ventriliquist last week. The "Vents" are a GREAT bang for the buck, I really enjoy them; but I have no sound form the sub!? I'm using an Onkyo TX-SR501, checked all conections, all subwoofer levels, switches. The led is green. Now what am I missing?

Do you have the Onkyo set up for a sub? Somewhere in the menus there is a place to set subwoofer=yes.
When set in "auto" mode, does LED change colors if there is no sub signal after a long period?

Green light meens your sub is getting a signal. Could be two things. Maybe you are not playing info with much bass - "do you have a movie with things that blow up?" It could also be that the connection from the amp to the woofer is loose. Call tech support, and they will be able to help you.

It has to be a placement/tweeking issue since Sasha told us how at the show the STF1 was shaking the whole floor!

Dudley....remember though, you always get a green light if you put the power switch in the "on" position.....signal or no signal.

I guess I assumed it was in auto since that is where mine is - oops.

The STF-1 is now working, thanks HSU support! The red wire to the speaker was not connected.? Anyway, now it is, and the sound is complete. I'm enjoying the full range, sounds and feels great.
