View Full Version : Is The VTF-1 Right For Me?

Hey, I知 new to the forum and to HSU. I知 looking for a new sub to "complete" my home theatre. I知 currently financially-challenged after a few other upgrades, so I知 looking for a cheaper sub solution. My theatre is about 16WX20L with a 10' ceiling (this is a guess, I need to measure).

The reviews for the VTF-1 quite frankly sound too good to be true (comparing it to a $3K B&W?!), but I know that HSU has an excellent reputation. Honestly, sub numbers (i.e., frequency response, watts, etc.) confuse me. Everyone seems to have a different opinion of which specs make the difference. So, here I am, looking for more opinions. :)

Any help would be much appreciated. I can offer more info if needed.

Thanks.

Hi BigScaryRobot,

Does your room open to any other areas of the house?

I suppose if budget and enclosure size requirements are very tight, you might be able to get by with a VTF-1, but one of the larger subwoofers such as VTF-2 MK3 would be better suited to fill that space.

Sincerely,

No, the room is a converted garage, so it's closed in. I'll measure the room tonight so I can offer exact dimensions. My only concern with the larger subs is the size. I tried an SVS a few years back and that was an eyesore sitting under my screen. Speaking of which, I should mention that currently I can only place a sub at the front of my theatre.

Thanks.

I used to have an STF-2 nearfield in a larger sized space (opening to dinning and kitchen). It did wonders or so I thought until I upgraded to a HO. Take Pete's word if you can swing it.

Pete, the room is 20Lx12W, so a tad thinner than I had guessed.

I was looking at a similarly sized Velodyne subwoofer that has 1200 watts. The Hsu I知 looking at only has 250. Is the real benefit of more watts the ability to ensure no distortion?

Those velo amps control the driver(Digital Servo) many times per second...It wastes a lot of energy doing that...The Hsu's have very low distortion numbers too so you end up saving a little energy...
