Hi,
On my onkyo I am able to set impedance, but I have only 2 options 4 ohms or 6 ohms. May I ask which should I set for my Hsu's speakers? I have HB-1 and HC-1 and Hsu subwoofers.

Hi Chris,

With these two impedance choices, you should choose 6 ohms.

Thanks Pete,
Received my VTF-3 MK3 and MBM-12 and now trying to configure my onkyo NR5008. Not sure why when playing a DTS or THX intro ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KuoXix6l3o0&playnext=1&list=PL400C809D0D18C252 ) I can feel the punch from my Hsu's speakers and subwoofers, but when the movie starts everything sounded mellow and I have to up the volume to 70-80 and it still doesn't feel nice.

There are certain crossover settings I am unsure what level/Hz to put and hope you can help, thank you.

Best Regards,
Christopher

The bass is deliberately emphasized in those intros just for the purpose of giving you that punch to make it sound impressive. Did you run Audyssey? It is important to level match your speakers, either with that or using an SPL meter. Audyssey will also do some equalization which might help (I say might because personally I don't like it at all but you should run it to see what sort of change that makes in your system). Right now it doesn't sound like you have things calibrated properly.

Hi Monkuboy,
I did try calibrating with Audyssey, it didn't turn out as nice as my previous onkyo 607. Because I just acquired the MBM and connected it to sw2 and my initial VTF to sw1, I think Audyssey just assume they are similar subs.

There are certain settings like "Speaker Configuration" I am unsure about. Like the "Front", "Center" and "Surround" speakers should I set it to 80Hz(THX) because the default was 40Hz.

The LPF of LFE is currently set to 120Hz max, and not sure should I lower this?

Also, in the "THX Audio Setup" do I set "THX Ultra2/Select2 Subwoofer" to "Yes" or "No"? And what is BGC? the onkyo manual doesn't explain. There is also "Loudness Plus" do I turn this on or off?

I am not sure what I should do to make it more punchy and loud.

Thank you,

There's others more qualified to post than me since I am not too sure what you do with two subs running Audyssey, but one thing I would recommend is setting the crossovers in the speaker config section of the setup menu to 80 hz. 40 is too low and you are leaving a gap between the subs (which kick in at 40) and the Hsu bookshelf speakers which do not go down that low. I used to have the HB-1's and had the crossover point set at 80 hz, using a VTF2 Mk 3 sub. That seemed to work pretty good. If your crossover is set at 40, that is definitely too low.

The 120 hz LFE is fine. You can leave it there. As for the THX setting, my suggestion is to set it to No, or Off. Personally I think THX is pretty hideous and makes everything sound muffled and dull. I have no idea what BGC is.

The main thing is to reset your crossovers to 80 hz. Then play with the loudness plus on or off and see how it sounds to you with each mode.

Good luck with everything!

Thank you, I did a factory reset and redone Audyssey again. After that I navigated to "Level Calibration" and noticed sw1 : +2.0dB and sw2 : -4.0dB, sw1 is my VTF and sw2 MBM.

I am still unable to get very loud or punchy effect, so I up the volume to 80 and on my VTF and MBM volume nob I turned their volume to near middle high. I am unsure if I am listening to the correct volume level, as I believe 80 volume level is very loud and I felt the punch too.

Thank you again,

Pete,

I also have a question about Audyssey stup on my Onkyo 708. I have HB-1's for front HC-2 for center, axiom QS8's for surrounds and a HSU ULS-15 Sub. When I ran Audyssey, in the speaker configuration section it set my fronts to 50hz, center to 40 hz and surrounds to 120 hz. When I changed all the speakers to 80hz it seems to sound much better. Do you have a recomendation for the settings? Thanks,

Rod

If it sounds better to you at 80 hz, I would leave it like that. That is a better setting for the Hsu speakers since expecting them to cover the range down to 50hz is not realistic. Personally, I don't like Audyssey at all and don't understand why so many people think it is the most wonderful invention known to man and rely on it more than their own ears.
