On some of the more demanding scenes in Braveheart...my STF-2 is vibrating up and down on my hardwood floors. The plastic spikes shaking on the hardwood is freaking loud and rather annoying.

At first I thought it was the seal issue, but upon closer inspection, i found the sub was acutally moving up and down. Thus causing the loud sounds.

Is that normal with a down firing sub?
I guess I'll have to weigh it down with something.

Seems kind of wierd to me. Maybe HSU should build the sub with a floor stand or brace to avoid this.

Putting the sub on a throw rug might help.

HSU reccomends a throw rug under the sub for that reason, and they also say it cuts down on some higher frequency distortion.

Unfortunately, there is so much power from the amplifier and woofer that it moves up and down a little. Putting a throw rug underneath will help eliminate any vibration.

Another idea is to put a potted plant on top!

You should definitely put something pretty heavy on top. If the enclosure is moving, it's partially canceling out sound or wasting bass energy. Idealy the enclosure should be absolutely stationary and the only moving portion should be the speaker cone. Definitely put something soft under the feet. Some kind of rug with thick rubber underneath would probably be ideal.

If the sub is placed directly on hardwood floors, with the spikes in direct contact with the wood surface, than the subwoofer will not perform optimally. The spikes need a surface (such as carpet, throw rug, rubber composite) where they can be properly grounded to the floor.

If placed directly on hardwood flooring performance will be hurt from this loss of energy not to mention damage to the flooring.

heed the warnings!!!

I have a hardwood floor. I just received my STF-2, and I'm using a set of these under the spikes (see link). They come as a set of heavy spikes and discs, with adhesive foam/rubber pads. The STF-2's spikes fit perfectly into the divots in the discs, and the adhesive pads under the discs keep things from moving around. I'm sure I'll find a use for the extra spikes somewhere.

I say that you should still put a rug under the sub

Well, in addition to the discs, I've got a vase full of stones on top of the sub (with rubber bumper feet), which adds a good amount of weight. The STF-2 is shockingly lightweight for a subwoofer of it's size, weighing less than the JBL PB10 that it replaced. I take it that the BASH amplifier contributes to it's sveltness. I'm sure a rug would work fine, but it was easier to use the foot-discs than try to find/cut the right size piece of carpet and find a certain color I liked.

I am using a third-party stand, the Gramma riser from Auralex, with good results. It improves the sound quality quite noticeably. See my post in Subwoofer forum. (http://www.hsuresearch.com/forum/showthread.php?t=756)
