I have owned an original VTF-2 Mk I and currently I own an MBM-12, a VTF-2 Mk III, and an av123 x-sub. Yesterday, in another forum, there was a 3 month old VTF-1 listed for sale. The seller lived in my same town so I picked it up last night after work.

I took it back to work and put it in my office. I hooked it up to my computer and calibrated it using a digital Radio Shack SPL. Using the included CD, it had decent output down to about 20 Hz. I then played Hotel California from the Eagles: Hell Freezes Over on XRCD. Wow, this little sub sounds incredible. I switched it from maximum extension to maximum output and cranked the volume. From 1 meter from the sub I was getting 115 dB of clean output. I quickly turned it back down again.

I had the x-sub in my office about a month ago, but it is currently on loan to my dad. I bought this thinking I would get the x-sub back for the office and let him have a sub that would better suit his room. However, right now I'm liking this sub too much!

It is a lot better than the x-sub and is extremely musical. I think it is every bit as good as the VTF 2 MK III without the maximum output capability. By the way, my office (which includes rolling shelves for archived accounting records) is 16ft x 36ft x 8ft for a total of 4,608 cubic feet. My coworker, who has an av123 MFW-15, was very impressed with the VTF-1.

Great job Hsu on an excellent sub.

Wow, very interesting mojave! That surprises even me that the VTF-1 is doing so nicely in that large room! It is definitely a great sub, especially when considering the relatively small size and light weight.

I hope you guys get a chance to see the new finishes too on the VTF subs. Even the standard Satin Black is very nice! It is a smooth painted black finish with "seamless" enclosure design.

How does it compare to the original VTF-2 mojave in max out and in max ext?

The original VTF-2 was similar in size to the current VTF-1. The VTF-1 has about 200 more cubic inches in volume. The VTF-2.1 had a 160 watt class AB amp (they originally had 150 watts, but later were updated to 160 watts). The VTF-1 has a 200 watt BASH amp. In my room, the VTF 2.1 was down 3 dB at 22 Hz. The current VTF-2 is probably similar in extension, but it has much more deep output. I never listened to the original in maximum output mode so I can't make a comparison.

When I upgraded from the VTF 2.1 to the 2.3, it was a huge upgrade. There was quite a difference in output across all frequencies. The VTF 2.3 also plays down to about 15 Hz in my living room. I feel like the current VTF-1 would be a good upgrade over the original VTF 2. It produces much more output and provides tighter, more defined bass over the original 2.1.

The original 2.1 was also subject to port chuffing when pushed even mildly hard. I don't get any port noise from my 2.3 in max extension mode regardless of volume level. From my brief listening, the current VTF-1 also does not produce any port noise.
