Well, I just received my new TH1220HO, and here are my promised impressions:

It is VERY stylish, and it has a VERY high quality look and feel to it; my wife didn't even notice it for 2 days!

It is top heavy, but I have it placed in a front corner on carpet and I haven't any problems so far; I will likely build a stand for it or secure it to the wall with wire.

I also bought the 500 watt amp, and it also has a very high quality look and feel (especially the volume control, face plate, heft, and overall build quality); it does get hot. I will probably get a couple of whisper-quiet fans.

The sound: I have an active stereo system which can be looped to my a/v receiver via a switch, so I connected the sub to my system using the high-pass, 51hz filter in the amp with the LFE effects being sent to the mains in DD or DTS. It sounds just like my system has always sounded: very transparent, sharp imaging, excellent timbre on male/female voices, wide and deep soundstage. There are two dramatic differences: 1) My system is suddenly capable of MUCH HIGHER volume levels in both music and movies; 2) Everything is cleaner sounding and dramatically more realistic than before. There is NO boominess, NO rattling, NO straining at any level that I have so far had the guts to listen at. In short, this sub blends SEAMLESSLY in my system. In fact, it is so seamless, that I am truly amazed. Since my speakers already go down to 20 hz =/- 1db, I was concerned that 51hz might be too high to crossover, but since it has integrated so seamlessly, I am not currently interested in experimenting with a different crossover point.

What I have done since receiving this wonderful product is to listen at every available opportunity to a wide range of materials, and I am yet to be disappointed with anything; and this is RIGHT OUT OF THE BOX! Nothing is broken in fully, nor have I experimented with placement, done any measurements, or changed crossover frequencies.

I am simply overjoyed with this sub; thank you Dr. Hsu! Great product; exactly as advertised!!

Nice review. That's what a really good sub is all about.

Glad to hear you're enjoying it. Just curious to know what sub you replaced with the 1220...? Was it a Hsu product?

My mains already go down fairly flat to t least 20 hz, but each speaker only has an isobaric dual 8" woofer, so I decided to go with the TN1220 after extensive analysis of the available subs at that price point, especially the available subs that have a HIGH PASS filter.

Incidentally, I have now had the opprtunity to measure the sub using the Stereophile Test Disc I & the new Radio Shack analog spl meter, & I can report that the TN1220 performs EXACTLY as advertised. I'm not sure how it does it since I've alwys been told that all rooms have resonances, BUT, it is approximately 6db down at 50 hz, & flat to within +/- 1db he rest of the way down in my room. Superb!!
