I have my yamaha 1400 which is rated at 110 watts per channel.. which im sure those are false numbers.. but anyways setting the volume at -17 db when the max is +9db and the volume starts as far back as -80db, am i running it to loud where i can potentially damage my speakers. At what volume setting would I have to worry about my yamaha receiver actually clipping and damaging my speakers. I doubt that my yamaha will clip at the volume set to -17 db when there is still 20-25 db to get to the max. Wouldn't running it at this volume since my atoms are my lowest wattage speakers rated at 80 watts and placed in the rears can i damage them. How many watts am i running on my yamaha 1400 at this setting...
Also when the ypao of the yammie does the test tones it does them at 0db volume level wouldnt this likely cause the amp to clip.. I would like to know that at what volume setting should i start worrying about clipping... My setup is hsu vtf 2 with paradigm mains cc370 center and atoms for rears. Mains are rated at 100 watts center at 120 and atoms at 80

Unfortunately, the answer to this question depends on a whole lot of things. The input level, frequencies amplified and passed on to speakers, speaker/sub crossover configuration, etc.
That said, I've run my 1400 at 0db with no apparent problem, -3db (approx) spdif connection, crossover at 80hz. Axiom speakers (I've found they're pretty rugged).
How easily your speakers damage will most certainly depend on your speakers.

under powering speakers would damage them much easier than over powering them, but you are not doing that.
One way to tell is by listening for distortion.
The VT12s that I have seem to be able to handle all that I feed them, although -13 db is the most I pushed them to so far but they still sound relaxed, however the sound is insanely loud at this point.
You are fine I say.

Hey Raindance did you say that you had your speakers level at -3 I have them at plus 6 db So your 0 is my -9 since i hav ea +6 db in speaker level and you have a -3 or at least thats what i understodd from you how about you tdekany..
The thing with me is when i watch a movie at about -17 db everything sounds nice and crisp but not the loudness and the feel power that i want.. To get this I have to go a little lower but im get scared once everything starts gettign real loud lol. With my old infinity speakers i used to drive them crazy on the volume knob but that was inexpensive speakers and i value my new system that much more and i would hate to go to the repair shop lol.... I will one day showw off a little and try to go down to like -12 to -10 db which is in reality -4 or -3 on the volume knob since my speaker level are set at a +6 db level....
