View Full Version : I'm a new fan of "behind the couch" placement

I've read the Dr. recommending placing the sub in close proximity to the viewing area (couch). Was always a firm believer of having the sub up front in a corner though.

Well, because of the sheer size of the STF3 I was compelled [by WAF] to get the thing out of sight a little better. Well, its behind the couch now and the power and the SPLs are just exponentially better.

Its unreal!

You've been brainwashed into thinking the front corner loading is the best place to put the sub. It might be the best place if you have no brain and don't know about sub placement. But in most cases, there are better places in your room to put your sub. TN's AES paper might go on bragging about corner placement than a few other locations in his room that were picked w/o consideration for sound, but it does not mean it is the best place.

IT DOSN'T MAKE TOO MUCH DIFFERENCE

It dosn't make a whole lot of difference on where you place the sub. Room size and decor often dictate where you can put it. You might have to compromise a little.

Moving a subwoofer as little as an INCH can have a profound impact on the sound and SPL you achieve in a room.

Well, I completely disagree with this. I haven't measured SPL's from one position to another but mathematically and geometrically I can see how it can be improved (different wall reflections, furniture, etc.). BUT, what I do notice is my percieved difference. With the sub closer to my couch the couch gets more interaction from the port and shakes 10x as much as when its in the front corner. So, from where I sit, it made a big difference.

The good part of my situation, moving it behind the couch was my compromise. I had to hide the beast -- turns out, I'm enjoying the power of the STF3 even more now.

I agree with you, Sputnik, my main speakers have a rear bass port, and the difference in sound with the speakers 6", 8" and 10" from the wall is noticible. I imagine the same thing with a subwoofer, just more so. Joe
