So I'm looking to buy a good sub for a new home theater setup. I've never had a surround sound setup in this room, so I'm not 100% familiar with the acoustics. After a good bit of research, I've found myself eyeing a HSU "true sub". Based on budgeting issues, I'm only able to consider the STF-1, STF-2, or VTF-1. Unfortunately, my budget is of the "use it or lose it" nature -- so saving up to buy a VTF-2 MK3 (or above) later would not be possible. :-(
So, between those 3 subs, I have a few concerns that I hope can be answered here.
First, I have high-pile carpet that is nearly 1" thick. It's not shag, it's just *very* high-pile. Every bit of furniture we have sinks deep down into it in a matter of minutes, and even if you stand in one spot for ~2 minutes, you can see your shoe imprints. It's incredibly comfortable to sit/lay on, but it's not very conducive to a down-firing sub. My concern is that neither the carpet spikes nor the rubber footpads are going to be sufficient to keep the carpet from hitting/muffling the sub. Any suggestions?
Second, I've been told that 2 well-placed subs are *much* better than one sub that is twice as powerful. If so, would it be better for me to sacrifice $200 on other components to buy 2x STF-1's, or just get one VTF-1? I know that for the price of 2x STF-1's, I *could* get a VTF-2 MK3, but if I'm only going to get 1 sub, I don't think I could justify the price.
If it matters, my room is 16.5' x 16.5' x 8' with a vaulted ceiling that is 14' at the peak. There is an 8' long floor-to-ceiling bookshelf on the south side, a 5' long brick fireplace on the north, the TV & L/C/R will be on the east, and the seating will be on the west.
Thanks for any help!!
