I have not seen many reviews on the STF-1, is this sub even worthy of being in the HSU line-up? I'm limited on space but do not want to sacrifice musical sound quality. Is the VTF-2 the true "musical" champion??

I have not heard the STF1, but did read what others had said about it.

As far as being worthy when you are looking for sound quality? Of course it is. It has to be - after all it was designed by Dr Hsu. I'd say that what it may be missing is very low frequencies

Give it a try and then draw conclusions.
BTW, I'd say the true "musical" champion is the TN1220!

You simply can't go wrong with "any" Hsu sub!

From what I understand, from about 32hz up, the output from the little STF-1 is almost as good as it's XTF-2 siblings. I have heard it and sound quality wise, it is every bit a Hsu.

I have heard it and sound quality wise, it is every bit a Hsu.As I mentioned in the post referenced above, if your room is small, you might not even notice its an 8 inch subwoofer at first. That is how good the STF-1 is. It has a 150 watt amp. That's as powerful as the VTF-2. This little monster is powerful for its size. I think its going to be a big hit.

But when you put in that demanding track, or organ music, you would feel less "air-shaking" bass. That is where the TNs and VTF-3s shine. They truly bridge the realm of sound and feeling, so that you don't hear the bass--you feel the pressure in the room. Its a magical feeling that the STF-1 can't replace.

There is the issue of source material, though. When most bass fans talk about "deep" bass they usually mean 16 Hz, 20 Hz, etc.. However, looking at the kind of material that is offered to us, mixed by engineers without true subwoofers, we usually only get bass down to 30-40 Hz.

Will this realization stop people from buying deeper playing subwoofers? No, because people want to know their sub can handle anything and everything that is thrown at them. HSU owners are also some of the most demanding out there, and really put our subs to the test with difficult content.

Does a lack of deep bass make the subwoofer not "sound good"? For those who listen to a lot of organ music, probably. For those who are new to subwoofers or don't listen to exotic material, probably NOT.

Maybe the STF-1 could be considered the "gateway" to our bigger subs. Its the one that gets you hooked, so to speek. When you demand more, and need more, there are the the VTF-3s and TNs.

Ok, since I am not interested in feeling the bass from a sub and ONLY concerned abut how it compliments music, it sounds like the STF-1 will "fit the bill". Appreciate the info/feedback! Can't wait to try out the STF-1 with my ACI Emeralds.

About three weeks ago, on the Hsu forum on Home Theater SPot... a gent asked about the STF-1 vs. the Velodyne CHT-8... both were $299, but with the experience I was having with the VTF-3 mark II (a great pair of subs... if my wife will EVER get her camera rolling, I will send pics of them stacked) ... It was an easy and proper suggestion to go with the Hsu... He did, has it, and has posted he loves it...

Now... We are planning another (small) sub shootout... Sasha... Would you like to send the STF-1 ? There are a LOT of guys out there that can afford a $300 sub... maybe we can keep them out of Best Buy...

I think a $300 sub shootout would be nice. If you have the time and resources to put on a shootout, we have the time to support you.

Dr. Hsu is a fan of subwoofers that fit a specific room, like the STF-1. At the CES show, our STF-1 was located at the back of a small room, in a corner. It filled that room so well that half a dozen people thought our dual TN towers were filling the room with bass! People were really amazed. I'm talking about people with mouths open saying "all that from an 8 inch subwoofer!". I think the STF-1 will do quite well in many people's rooms.
