Hello,
My current system consists of :
Onkyo 808
PSB (2) T-6's
PSB (2) B-5's [right now the B-5's are on top of old speakers... I am going to put shelvs on the wall for them)
I have a very open floor plan and am wondering what sub would be best fit.
I use my system 70% for music and 30% for movies.

Hi soljarag, welcome to the forum!
Do you have any particular enclosure size constraints when it comes to a subwoofer? Is there any particular dollar amount you are looking to spend on a subwoofer?
Thanks

I have a very open floor plan and am wondering what sub would be best fit.
I have the same issue, which I posted about a few weeks ago (although I don't know whether our room dimensions are similar).
I was first considering the VTF-2 MK 3, but with the sale I'm now thinking about the VTF-3 MK 3. I have another issue, though, which is placement. I prefer to place the sub next to one of my front speakers, but the space is fairly confined. I would have only an inch or two on each side of the sub, between the speaker and a floor heating vent. I also would have to push the sub back against the rear wall or it would protrude out too far into the room. I think both of these are no-no's. I also see that the VTF-3 MK 3 fires to the side, which would be directly into the side of my speaker; I don't know whether or not this is a problem.
So, I've been sitting on my hands while trying to figure the right balance between a sub that is big enough for the room, yet small enough to fit the space. It may be that the VTF-2 MK 3 is enough sub for the room, but when I read through other forums like AVS, I get the impression that no sub is ever big enough.

Thanks for the replys.
I would like to stay around $1,000 (shipped).... the size of the enclosure doesnt really matter....
I was actually looking at the VTF-15H .... would that be enough for this big area?
would TWO - VTF-2 MK 3 Subwoofer be better? (.....I would rather stick with just 1 sub)

Hi soljarag,
Considering that you would like to stick with one subwoofer, then VTF-15H is a great choice. It has quite a lot of flexibility in terms of operating modes and adjustable Q, so you should be able to get a good result with music and movies.
In theory having two subwoofers that are separated can give flatter and smoother response, so it never hurts to do that, but some people either don't have the space or don't want to integrate more than one sub.

My room is about 20% smaller than that. 1/2 of my floors are carpeted. I'm filling the room nicely with a VTF-2 MK3. I'm not even working the thing. I think the VTF-15H is going to be an excellent choice. That way you can have as much bass as you feel at any point in time. With the sale going on, you can't go wrong.

well guys, I placed my order for the VTF-15H yesterday... I can't wait to hear it!
What connection would you recommend I use to hook it to my Onkyo 808?
I am trying to figure out where to place this beast....
--The first place I am going to try is right next to my left tower speaker (the speaker that is currently beside it is going on a shelf)
--The other place I am thinking is the small corner where the arch wall is in this photo http://mclatworthy.com/speaker2.jpg
Any other ideas?
Thanks

Congrats on your purchase.
A standard sub cable will be fine, for example a GR6 coaxial cable with RCA ends. (it's cheaper to have one made than a pre-packaged one). One end from your AVRs Sub out to the RCA in the Sub.
What's on the right side of the rooms corner? You can take advantage of any room gain in a corner. Every room is different so a sub crawl will be in order. A SPL meter would be handy.
You don't want to be sitting in a null
My opinion would be place away from the room openings if possible.
Have fun playing with the settings, I'm still playing and I've had one since Nov and my 2nd since maybe Feb (I forget now lol)
P.S. I just saw one your other shots and noticed the windows there. I'm sure you'll sort out the best spot. :-)

Thanks for the Reply,
So do I need just 1 RCA's on each end? or do I need one that has 1 on one end, and 2 on the other?
Yeah, I have a feeling I'm going to be dragging this sub all over the room :)

I know some guys like to use a Y connector to send a stronger signal to wake the sub up if it's "auto" mode. A cable with a male plug on each end will be fine.
Getting a set of furniture sliders will help. They are a round thinish hard plastic disk with dense foam on one side for your sub to sit on.
Likely any Hardware store will carry them for a few $. Moving the sub around will be a breeze on tile floors or carpet.
