In using a passive 1220, will the quality of the amp play a significant role in the sound quality of the sub? In other words, do I need to consider purchasing a mid/high end amp for the 1220 or will a basic plate amp sound just as good?

Subwoofers test the strength of an amplifier more than any other type of speaker. The "horsepower" of an amp, or the RMS rating, helps you determine if it can power the subwoofer during peaks and demanding scenes.
As far as I know, the only critical specification is that the amp must be rated at 4 Ohms into 200 watts or more.
Some amps do not have enough power, and others are not rated down to 20 Hz (but that is harder to tell from their specifications).
Oh, and make sure to use the Bass Optimizer, which has electronic compensation and protection for the subwoofer.
