Is this possible? I would like to get my son a sub for his dorm room and let him hook up the computer or ipod minijack straight to a HSU sub and have the sub be the amplifier for some speakers he has (these are not powered computer speakers). He would use the ipod or computer volume setting to control volume.

I don't know if the speaker output on the subs are amplified by the sub amplifier or just pass-throughs of amplified signals from another amplifier.

Has anyone done this successfully?

I looked around and found a difference between the VTF and STF control panel. It seems the VTF has stereo inputs, but not the STF, so this probably means the VTF is entry level for this application..

Hi gotvinyl,

Some of our subwoofers have speaker level outputs that feed to the main speakers, but these are essentially just pass through and do not actually amplify the main speakers. So he will need a separate amplifier to power his main speakers, or will need to use some powered main speakers.

Sincerely,

Thanks, Pete.

One more question. I am considering the STF-1 combined with a pair of modified Minimus 7's. I noted that the crossover on the STF-1 is variable from 30 - 90 HZ. Does that mean I would not be able to cross over above 90? The Minimus 7's drop out below 100 HZ, and I would want to go a little higher. Thanks for your help.

If you have a receiver with bass management that allows you to cross over at 100 HZ you can bypass the crossover on the stf-1.

That is a good point about a receiver's bass management. I was hoping to do this with a stereo receiver that does not have that capability. I wonder of the STF-1 would go up to 100 - 110 without bass management?

If you disengage the crossover on the sub and use the high pass connections on the sub it will play up to 110 hz. The only problem is that it won't stop at 110 hz. It will play bass all the way up to 250 hz. Not sure if the overlapping frequencies from the main speakers and the sub would cause cancellation issues or not.

So, on the sub's controls, I would be able to cut it off at 90 or lower? The Minimus drops off about 5 db steadily from 200 to 100, and 1 or 2 db more from 100 to 90. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad to use the sub's filter at 90.

Is the ideal situation to have some overlap between the cutoff of the subs and the mains?

Hi gotvinyl,

We would have to modify the STF amplifier in order to have the internal low-pass filter go as high as 100Hz or more.
