Dear Sasha,

Currently I'm using a VTF-3 with my ProAc mini speakers(5" woofer). I set the crossover to around 70Hz. I'd like to try this High Pass Filter, but I don't know what Cross1 & Cross 2 I need. Can you please give me some basic advice? :p

How is the High Pass filter is connected in the system?

The HP filter is hooked up between your preamp and amp since it filters out the low freq signal at line level before it is amplified.

To select the frequencies, you could pick one for music mode and another, either serious bass or HT mode. The music mode's freq could be anywhere near your speaker's rolloff point to half an octave above that, depending on how low a response your main speakers go. This mode would allow you to have your speakers produce a good portion of the bass, allowing the upper to mid-bass transition to be literally seamless, if they do in fact produce it cleanly and accurately and they interact well with your room in that freq range. The other mode could be in the 80-100hz range, where most of any bass would be removed from your main speaker and handed off to your sub, which would be much more capable in the bass.

Another possibility is to select 2 freq that you think would fit your need and experiment with them. One possible option would (this could apply to method also) measure the freq resp of your speakers and the sub seperately in your room. Wherever there is a room peak by either one, try to set the filter's freq above or below that peak so as to minimize its contribution to the overall response in the room. Example 1: If your speaker has a peak at 52hz, but it is not in your sub's response. You could set the high pass to be 65hz & sub's low pass at or around the same freq. Example 2: If your sub has a peak at 66hz, set the high pass for the speaker at 50hz and the sub's low pass at or around the same freq.

Thank you for your advice. It's very helpful :)

I got another question: I'm useing a intregrate amp, so can I still use this High pass Filter?

I use pre-out to connect the vtf-3

No, unless your integrated preamp has a set of pre-out and amp-in connections in whch jumpers are used to tie them together.

Lwang is correct. Your integrated amp must have MAIN IN/ PRE-OUT connectors.

Since you only have 5 inch woofers, we suggest you get the high pass filter set at 80 Hz. You might want to get the second frequency set at 60 hz in case you ever get much larger front speakers.
