I just recently purchased the STF-2 to complete my HT system and I have a few questions about set-up. Bare w/ me as I just joined the forum and am a newbie...
Anyways my system.....
Paradigm mini-monitors fronts
Paradigm atom surrounds
Paradigm 170 center
Pioneer 912K
My debate is what speaker size setting should I set my pioneer - "S" or "L"?
The "S" setting has a 100hz cross-over. If have the stf-2 in the "out" position - can the stf-2 actually reach "up" to the 100hz with no problems? Will there be any drop off or gaps?
If i were to set it to the "L" the pioneer sends everything to the mains. No signal are sent to the sub - BUT there's an option on the pioneer called "plus" that sends all the signals to the mains AND subwoofer. Will this be a better set-up compared the "S"?
Any suggestions or insight w/ setting up the pioneer 912 would be great!
Thanks

I would stick to "S".
No reason to make the receiver work harder and send the full signal to the speakers, especially since they won't be able to.
The 100hz crossover setting will be fine.

Curtis is right, Small is the best setting. Its esepcially true for mini-monitors. In general, we prefer small for almost all size speakers, except perhaps ones with subwoofers built in. Even then, its debatable if the main speakers don't do a good job with the bass

S is the best setting for your system.
"If i were to set it to the "L" the pioneer sends everything to the mains. No signal are sent to the sub"
If you set the mains to large that will not mean that no signal goes to the sub, it just means that no bass that would have gone to the mains will go to the sub. The LFE and the bass below 100 Hz that is meant for your remaining speakers will still go to the sub.
Enjoy your setup. :)

Sasha,
I'm planning on getting an STF-2 in the not so distant future. It will be accompanying a pair of floorstanding Axiom M60Ti's. Axiom speakers are known for their accuracy. Would you still suggest setting these speakers to "small"? I guess I could always wait until I actually have my STF-2 and determine for myself what sounds better to me...but what's the fun in that.

rdwarn,
With the Axiom M60Ti, it would be better to have a lower crossover setting than 100hz.
The more capable receivers will allow you to set the speakers to small, and have an adjustable crossover. This is very beneficial when you have more capable speakers because you can send more of the frequency range to the speakers.

Rdwarn - what reciever do you have? Will it allow an 80 Hz crossover? I have large tower speakers that I set to small with an 80 Hz crossover. The large speakers still get signal below 80 Hz as it is not an abrupt cutoff.

Haha, well I guess my problem is going to be that I don't have a very good reciever. I have a "state of the art" Sony DE-540 I believe the model number is. I bought it in 2000 because it had DTS 5.1 capability at a price I could afford. Anyway, I know it has Large and Small setting for all five speakers but I don't think I can adjust the cross over with the reciever. Couldn't I set my Axiom mains to "Large" and then adjust the cross over on the STF-2 itself?
The M60Ti's will play down to about 37Hz. I'm not sure what the cross over options are on the STF-2 but if I could set it to 50 Hz or 60Hz even though the bass is being double up do you think it would still sound good and accurate?
