when everythig is adjusted so the speakers all read the same level. the volume control on the sub woofer is barely truned up may by but a hair and im use the AV crossover. so is this right for the volume on the sub to be set so low :confused:

It very well may be right, especially if it is an STF/VTF-3. The STF-2 was a little less sensitive, though I think they made a running change to increase sensitivity there as well.
If everything sounds right and measures right, then you should be fine.

My volume is also set very low. Barely at the first hash mark (VTF-2 MKII). Anything more and it sounds boomy. I have concrete walls and a rather small room, 10x14. So I hope this is normal too... Nonetheless, it sounds great and I am very pleased.

I have a VTF3 in a 15'x23' room. I tuned mine where LFE is about 5 db above the other channels. It's still a VERY low volume setting, and LFE is definitely at 0 on the receiver. I can't figure out who would need max output mode! It's been incredible and sounds better every day.
