View Full Version : VTF-3MK3 VS. ULS-15...is it worth the move?

Has anyone "traded-up" from the VTF-3MK3 to the new ULS-15? From a sound perspective, is there a big enough difference to make the move? I like my VTF, but it really isn't the most attractive sub and the wireless feature on the ULS is a nice plus for me.

Your input please!
Thank you.

jnc, what tuning mode are you currently using on the VTF sub? Also, what are your room dimensions (HxWxD), including dimensions of other areas that the theater room opens up to?

The ULS has some notable advantages in terms of deeper extension and lower distortion compared to the -3 MK3. Also, the ULF trim control and shallow low frequency rolloff means that it does a much better job at taking advantage of any room gain. Finally, with wireless technology and the relatively compact enclosure size, it is much easier to optimally place the unit in-room without running a subwoofer cable all over the place.

Hi Pete,

Thank you for responding......

Ok...I'm kind of a rookie....so, please explain "tuning mode" to me.

My finished basement is approx 20' x 30' x 9' ceilings - all drywall. My VTF-3MK3 is positioned in the back corner of the room, behind the listening position. I listen to music and movies about the same.

BTW....all my other speakers are Klipsch Reference series if that helps.

Also.......do you know anything about Zu Audio's Method sub and how it might compare to the ULS?

Thank you again,
Jon

Jon, by tuning mode I mean whether or not you have one port plugged or two ports open on the VTF-3 MK3.

I do think the ULS-15 will work very nicely in that space. And especially with the ULF trim control, I think you will get higher output over the more common bass ranges compared to the -3 MK3, while having much deeper bass extension too.

I'm in the process of trying to sell my VTF-3 HO so that I can upgrade to a dual drive ULS-15 setup. The HO is more than enough for my HT need, but I feel that the sealed sound I am anticipating from the ULS-15 will be to my liking. Do I need to upgrade? No,not really. Will I upgrade, any day now.

Pete,

I have both ports open.

Thank you for the advice!

Jon

Thanks Jon.

With the ULS-15, I think you will find that you will get much deeper extension than you have right now, while having as good or better output over the more common bass ranges, in addition to cleaner sound and lower distortion at regular listening levels.
