View Full Version : Subs on Ceiling?

I was recently in a Virgin Records store and noticed that they had their speaker system suspended from the ceiling, including what appeared to be subwoofers. This got me thinking- would placing a sub on the ceiling provide superior sound distribution? I am aware that this would not be an option for most sub owners; I however, live in a loft apartment with 14 ft ceilings and huge wood beams. It would be possible in my apartment to mount my VFT2 up near the ceiling without it looking ridiculous. What do you think the sound quality would be like in such a placement? Is this nuts?

I have vision's of someone holding the VTF-2 above their head playing Master and Commander and shouting at the wife ....... does that sound better than on the floor ??? - LOL - Ha-ha
Just joking with you of course.
Ceiling mounting is not feasible for most. Besides that fact it would be a very odd position for the downfiring /side ported (rear on Mk2 version) VTF-2. Like any room position you try, you can not just put it anywhere and it will sound it's best. Room modes interact and change with different listening and speaker/subwoofer positioning. This makes things like ceiling mounting not easy ..... especially if you after the best sound. Virgin do it for the physical room available in a ceiling (i.e. they are not in the way of customers).
Look at the old Home Theater Architect articals done in SGHT and WSR where Russ did some ceiling subs and discussed the issues. One such home was down in Mexico from memory.
