My new toy arrived today and the setup process has begun. Although the supplied test CD refuses to play in my DVD player I went ahead and did the best I could by ear. With Dr. Hsu's help I think I have a workable location but will need to get a test disc to dial it in. The Tn passed the SAF immediate eviction test with only 2 questions "what the hell is that?" and "how much did you spend?" As far as sound goes it is just too early to tell. I have been able to rattle most everything in our living room but still don't have even sound. It did sound pretty good on Bachbuster's Toccata and Fuge in D minor, but other things are off. I have the LFE pre out run to the amp and the x-over engaged with the mains being rolled off by my receiver's own x-over at 100 hz. I can't wait to wip out all the DVD's I have been collecting for the past week or so in anticipation of this day! My Telarc 1812 overture disc is all cleaned and ready, as is all the classic big bass DVD's! Wish me luck, and if anyone has any suggestions on test CD's Please post them! I did buy the Radio Shack Digital Sound Meter but need some reference tones!

Do you have the SACD of the Telarc 1812? If so, it has SACD test tones to set your system up for SACD (which will likely be quite different from DVD playback levels and calibration). Your receiver should have tones to use as well, for setup, in conjunction with your SPL meter. Avia or Digital Video Essentials are good discs as well, but are more for calibrating the system for DVD playback (DVE also has a bit of "funkiness" with the LFE tones, I'd recommend Avia over DVE for this reason).

Thanks Sorny, I did happen to buy the Avia DVD but don't have a SACD player yet. I do however have the original Telarc 1812. Since the HSU test CD doesn't work in my DVD player but does work on my computer, I may try to run a long interconnect to my receiver and use it that way. I do have one question though, does anyone know what test tones/frequencies the individual tracks are? I have an older test CD that has tones at 20, 40, 100, 440, 1k etc and it has been somewhat useful in telling me that I have a peak at 40 (relative to 20) and I'm about 15-20 db down at 100 HZ. I have an old EQ with pink noise generator and mic, but as luck would have it, when I pulled it out of the garage yesterday.....the lights only briefly flicker when I push the power button. I don't know if this is just a dirty button or a bad power supply but I don't think I am qualified to fix it. Even though I it's not really tuned in right yet, I fired up the T-Rex scene of the DTS Jurrasic Park last night and cranked it to about 75 DB. Holey crap! My pulse raced and it was scarey...even on my old 27 inch tv...that doesn't even have a S-video input! Again, if anyone can tell me what the tones are on the HSU cd it might help me tune this thing in. Thanks all,

Yohann,

I got the TN1220 also, & the test disc didn't work in my dvd player either until I made a backup via my cd burner onto a CD-RW disc instead of a CD-R. Many players that do not recognize CD-R discs (the Hsu disc is a CD-R), WILL recognize Cd-RWs. Try it, if you can.

Yes, that's the one! I just found that last night so I will try to make sense out of it. I think I will use some longer conx and use the cd player in the bedroom, or maybe burn a new copy. The DVD player has never had a problem with CD-R's before though, so this is kinda odd. Hopefully I can get the system calibrated this week, after my first attempt my better half forbid me from any testing while she was in the house....what the heck is wrong with a 20 hz tone at 85 DB? I thought it felt kinda nice. :p

Thanks to all
