Hi everyone,

I just wanted to give you some advance notice about an exciting new product announcement regarding MBM-12. To start, I would like to mention that we only have extremely low quantity of vinyl black MBM-12's in stock right now, and it will be several months before the MBM-12 is back in stock.

So you may be wondering, why will it take several months to re-stock MBM-12?

The answer to this question is that we have decided to re-design the MBM-12 and release a newer version later this year.

The new MBM-12 will have the following features:

1) Variable tuning capability! One can simply add or remove a supplied 4" foam port plug and flip a bass extension switch on the amp to switch between 'Sealed' or 'Ported' Mode

2) Wireless connectivity option will be available! This will make it much easier to position the MBM in the nearfield without running subwoofer cables across the room.

3) New finishes will be available! Standard finish will be Satin Black, and several luxury finishes will be available as well

So this unit will be perfect to use with the ULS-15, or any of our other true subwoofers. Price is still to be determined, and will have to go up a bit, but hopefully not too much. The size and shape and orientation of woofer/port will still be the same as the current MBM-12, but with all the changes mentioned above.

I am really excited about this unit, and hope you will be too in the months ahead!

Sincerely,

Ddavidson

Brilliant news. The wireless option will allow so many more placement options.

Well done Dr Hsu.

How does the sound change between the 'Sealed' and 'Ported' Mode?
Thanks.

Will it still use the same driver?

Will I be able to use it wireless along with my wired VTF3 HO w/turbo?

Very nice Pete - sounds like a very versatile unit. I think those are great positive changes for the MBM.

Yes you will. I have ULS-15 which works the same way. If you have a ULS 15 you can also run one transmitter for both the sub and MBM

With the simple user switchability between ported/sealed and the added high quality finishes, no doubt the new MBM will be find an even bigger market.

Sadly I haven't really had a chance to really compare the two modes. In theory, if the MBM is placed next to or very close to the true subwoofer, then they will integrate a bit better in the sealed mode. But at the same time, in the ported mode there are reduced driver excursion demands, so harmonic/intermodulation distortion might be a bit lower in the ported mode.

It will be a lot easier to compare with the new model! With the current version, once it is sealed, it really should only be used as sealed, so it's not easy to compare without swapping out for another ported unit.

Hopefully so! Thanks for all the positive feedback Ddavidson!

I just bought one. I decided a few days ago to pull the plug so waiting a few months would drive me nuts right now. Plus I assume that you still have to plug it in so there will be a cord running to it anyway so not having to use the subwoofer cord isn't that big of a deal to me.

My fear is that all of you guys will go on and on about how great it sounds sealed....:) Oh well, that's the price I'm paying for a few more months of chest pounding (I'm hoping) music.

Most people will not be able to tell the diff between ported and sealed with the MBM as it is in the mid range. Now if it was in the low range, that is different.

Dang it just bought a sealed one! Anything different about returning a sealed one versus a ported one, do I eat the modification fee? Price going up on the new model?

I would just hang on to the sealed MBM (although you can return the MBM within the 30 day trial period where we would refund everything less shipping and handling). It will be several months before a new MBM is ready, and price is still to be determined too.

Hi Pete,

Would you consider making an mbm-12 without a port plug? How about a front-firing version so I can stack them on my ULS-15's.

Hey Tony,

Not in the foreseeable future. However, the best way to use the MBM with your ULS-15 is to actually turn the MBM on it's side (so that driver fires forward, and width of the unit becomes somewhere ~18", just about the same width as ULS-15) and then stack the ULS on top of the MBM!

Was about to pull the trigger on an MBM only to find there aren't any left. Damn.

So sealed/ported will be standard, but wireless will be an option on all the new MBM's?

Very good question Bill, I would say several months from...

Couple = 2
Few = 3
Several = 4 to infinity

I think I have room to fit one directly behind the back row.
It would be very nearly directly against the wall. Would that work?

Absolutely! That should work very nicely my friend :)

I just noticed that I wrote "several months from..." and forgot the "now" part, :D

anyone looking to purchase a Auralex subdude 15x15 for 35.00 shipped PM me. These work perfect with the MBM-12.

So its been yet another month... anything new to report? is HSU getting any closer to being able to establish the approximate month the new and improved MBM-12 might be released in? I'm just trying to keep this thread alive... I'm really needing a sealed version of the MBM-12 and there are currently none around to be had... sigh.

Hey monomer,

Looks like it will still be at least two or three months before the new MBM-12 is ready. One other thing I should mention is that for now, the new MBM will not have wireless connectivity option. This would require a much more significant board re-design, and would add to cost.

Sincerely,

Pete,

Look, I'm a huge fan and have owned a MBM-12 and currently own two ULS-15s.... but if all you can say about a sealed MBM-12 is that in theory it could better voice match sealed subs, then what is the point of offering a sealed sub? Does someone know that it sounds better or different?

Pete_Hsu
May 6th, 2009, 4:42 PM
Hey lanion,

We know that the overall [acoustic + electrical] rolloff slope of the sealed MBM-12 matches perfectly with the low pass slope on our true subwoofers. So, provided that the MBM is next to or very close to the true subwoofer, then it's clear that the sealed MBM will integrate better. However, when the MBM is separated from the true sub, then the frequency response will be different vs the co-located solution, so it is more difficult to predict what would happen. Also note that there is a matter of preference too. Some people prefer a punchier sound, some people prefer a softer sound, etc.

When Ron used his MBM-12's next to his ULS-15's, he prefered the sealed MBM to the ported MBM, which makes sense given that they were all co-located. In a different scenario with MBM located far away from the true sub, it might be a different case. We'll know more when people start getting their hands on the new MBM-12 with sealed and vented operating modes.

Sincerely,
