i am about to purchase a sub to upgrade from my current one (velodyne vrp1000). I am trying to decide between the SVS pb12, vtf-2 mk3 or the vtf-3 mk3. Going by the room size recommendation on HSU's site Im in the room 3 size. Im REALLY leaning towards the HSU subs. As far as the HSU's go, are there any differences in the drivers between the vtf2 and vtf3? Does anyone have any input that may help me nail down my choice? I am worried that if I get the vtf3 it will be too much for my room, but im also worried that if I go with the vtf2 I will always wonder what im missing. I will be watching about 90% movies vs 10% music. Thanks in advance.

Go with the 3.3! It's one of the best all around subs that HSU produces and you can never have too much sub for a room.

You can always reduce the output of the 3.3 but you can't increase the output of the 2.3 (well, maybe, but it's not simple).
You may by able to get by with the 2.3 but we'd have to see a sketch of your room to know for sure.
Hope this helps,
Ken
PS: I have a 2.3 and love it but I have a "2" room size.

Go with the 3.3 and don't look back. I researched subs for weeks before finally pulling the trigger on the 3.3. I tried to rationalize the more expensive Hsu and SVS models before giving the 3.3 a shot.
Mine arrived Friday afternoon and I'm very impressed with it. I will not need another one, nor do I feel the need for a turbocharger.
Although I read the dimensions before I ordered it, I (read: my wife) found it to be larger than I expected. A 5 minute demo cured all spousal apprehension.
I went with the Espresso finish - it is definitely furniture quality and blends well with the rest of my furniture.
Sunday afternoon I screened The Dark Knight and the sub made all the difference in the world. The explosions were excellent and the rumble of the Batmobile left a dent in my chest.

Several things to consider (answer):
1) How big is your room? (is it open plan)
2)How much physical space do you have? (a vtf3 is much larger than vtf2)
3) How loud do you listen?
4) What are your main speakers?
5) Budget Limits?
In some rooms a sub that is physically too large limits the available location options. The ideal thing is to find the right subwoofer location. The subs location within your room needs to best balance your rooms acoustics limitations. As others have mentioned its easy to turn a big subwoofer down, but once the limits of a sub are reached your up for a new sub ..... or multiple/s of your current sub.
All Hsu subs are industry leaders within their budgets so its really more about finding out just how big is big enough for your particular wants and needs.

1- my room is approx 2550 cubic ft with openings to kitchen behind couch
2-I have plenty of room for for a big sub
3-I have a Denon avr-1909 and listen to movies around -20-15 db
4-My mains are klipsch floorstanding F-2's (dual 6 1/2's)
5-My budget is up to $800 if need be, no more though
Currently I have a POS velodyne 10 in the corner and it does ok untill you give it too much volume with certain frequencies. It doesnt go deep at all, I would say 30-35hz at most.
Thanks for the help

A few weeks ago, I was also searching for a new sub to replace my aging and not very good Infinity HTS-20. I did all the research like everybody else does.
I checked out every vendor online that I could find, ( Axiom, Elemental, Epic,Polk Audio, SVS,Velodyne, etc) plus more that I don't have listed. I live in southern Oregon, and there are no places around here any more where a person can go to to check out new subwoofers to listen to, and compare with others. I heard everything that Circuit City had, before they closed, and I was not impressed with any of the subs that they had, including, several Velodynes, several Polk Audio's, and several Boston Acoustics and a few more brands that I dont remember. Some costing upwards of a grand.
I kept coming back to HSU's website, partly because at one time, a while back, I emailed HSU for some advice about subwoofers and home theater in general, and I immediately got a very thought out and helpful reply from none other than Dr. Hsu himself. He told me that the VTF3-Mk3 would work very well for me, in my setup, among alot of other helpful information and answers to my questions. Well, to end this story, I ended up buying a new VTF3-Mk3 about a month ago and am I ever glad that I did. I have been messing around with stereo & HT equipment for about 33 years, and I have never heard a better sounding Subwoofer than this one. It is wonderful and very powerful for both music and movies. The sound is so different from my old Infinity, which sounded like a HTIB sub, (a real one note wonder) after hearing my new VTF3-MK3. I cannot believe how good a True subwoofer can sound. Delivery took only about three working days from the time I ordered it, to the time that the Fed-ex truck pulled up to my house. The sub arrived in perfect shape, packed very well in a large box. I could not be happier with my purchase.
The sub puts out tons of very clean powerful bass with no sloppiness whatsoever. It blended with my Polk Audio Tower speakers and center channel just like magic, although, I am still having fun tinkering with some of the settings, but that is just me. I have the sub volume turned to about nine o'clock and that rattles the walls, and everything else in my house.. You should definitely buy the VTF3-MK3 from HSU Research. You will be very happy and glad that you did..........
PS
I sold my old Infinity sub on ebay for $125. so I only had to put out about $500 for the sub. What a deal!!!
