The manual for the VTF MK2 states that "a special subwwofer cable is not needed, and neither is a Y-connector." I have read a few articles that state the there is a 3-10 dB increase in bass if a Y-connector is used. Does this not apply to HSU subs, or is it the usual subjective audiophile blabbering?

It is the usual blather. You may get an increase, but it is just the same as turning up the volume on the sub, or turning up the sub volume on the reciever. Some people claim it helps if you have extemely efficient speakers (think klipschorns) and turning up the volume all the way on the reciever still does not give you enough signal. Even this should be able to be worked out with the volume level on the sub.
It will not increase the subs ability to play loudly at all.

Y connectors offer no sonic benefit over turning up the volume knob a little.

The gain on the VTF-2 is already high so any extra gain is not needed. The paranoid in us can make people believe all sort of placebo effects. Ask the cable gods, and you will be in sonic nivaria if you pay $500 for a pr of 3ft interconnects.
