I recently set up a separate 2-channel system with bookshelf speakers. Sounds wonderful, but I'm looking into purchasing a subwoofer -- either the STF-2 or STF-1. I listen mostly to jazz and female vocals, so the sub doesn't need to go real low. I'm just looking for good, tight bass to accentuate the lows. I used to own a VTF-2 and know it can definitely handle the job, but I haven't heard much about the STF-1. Of course I don't want to spend the extra $100 bucks for a STF-2 if it isn't necessary. Besides, I need a small sub for the WAF. Room size is 17' x 12' with an 8 foot ceiling.

Does the STF-1 sound just as good as the VTF/STF-2 above 32 Hz???
Any thoughts?

Why did you get rid of the VTF-2?

Yes...the STF-1 does sound just as good as the 2's above 32hz.

17x12 might be pushing that little guy though....better check with Sasha or Dr. Hsu.

I sold the VTF-2 with the intent to upgrade it for HT purposes. The STF-1 will be used for MUSIC ONLY and will not be played at very loud volumes.

I decided to get the STF-2. Looking forward to hooking it up when it arrives.

I have a 16' X 24' room and Dr. Hsu said the STF-2 would work, but if the budget allows, go to the STF-3. There is a $225 difference. Decisions, decisions.....

Even though the STF-3 is more money than the STF-2, I think its the sweet spot of the current range. With its 12" driver and 300w amp, it really is a serious performance choice. I have had the older VTF-2 ($499) and VTF-3 ($849) since they where first released, and for the price Hsu is asking for the STF-3 (especially after hearing it) I think the STF-3 is an absolute steal. In a 16x24 sized room the STF-3 would deliver everything you asked of it, with plenty in reserve for those crazier moments.

I have been running a pair of Ascend 170's with both the STF-1 and the VTF-3 Mark II in max output mode (pretty much identical to the STF-3) ...

The STF-1 is a wonderful music reproducer, tight, and surprisingly powerful and deep. Combined with the Ascends, they make an amazingly full range speaker for the $600... and for $299 on its own, the STF-1 is wonderful...

When you switch to the "3"... it opens a whole new world... it is deeper, even more tuneful, and transforms the system into something easily comparable to $3000 speakers like PSB Stratus Golds...

DD... Don't faint, but I agree 100%... for $599 it is remarkable...

BeFree... You will be getting a great subwoofer with the STF-1... but you should consider the "3"... you won't have "upgraditis"...
