Car Sub-Woofer Enclosure Design
Useful information that everyone owning a car sub should know.
Taking all the complexity of all the datas explained for car's subwoofer below, not sure that everyone will be able to produce. But for home users, this only show the challenges that the good Dr. has faced and was able to bring to market subwoofers that are really marvellous in sound. I understand better now why larger size driver is better if not equal than multiple smaller size drivers as why one VTF-3 Mk2 may be better than 2 VTF-2 Mk2 as it explains in the acoustic power formula. IMO, simply because one with larger driver already outperforms the one with smaller driver even two of them, unless they are in the drivers are in the same enclosure, they may be equal to the larger driver, but this is not the case. This will surely help one to decide whether to go with VTF3-HO or 2 VTF2-HOs. http://www.termpro.com/articles/subwoof.html

Digital Signal Processing (DSP)
With HSU's recent investment in DSP technology which has its full potential in subwoofer application. In fact, companies like Bang & Olufsen in their Beolab 5 and Velodyne in their DSP-controlled DLS-R series subwoofers have already launched DSP-controlled subwoofers, so, expect use of this technology in HSU's future subwoofers as for room bass correction and cleaner, deeper bass and memorized presets to your liking to movie/music types. Out of curiosity, did you get permission to reproduce the above from their respective owners? As nice as it is to have everything on one page, copyright also applies to material on the web. I wonder if your complete, verbatim quotations have gone beyond fair use.
It might have been better to write a brief summary or quote a few suggestive sentences from each article and then link to it, to help people find interesting things to read and to respect the authors' efforts. You did not have to include a copyright notice and register a copyright to receive protection. The great advantage of doing that was that you did not have to show economic loss before you could go to a court and collect damages: the mere infringement of your work was (and is?) enough to collect money from someone. I doubt that anyone has gone to that trouble here. On the other hand, American copyright law has gotten much more strict and troublesome over the years. There are a lot of opportunistic clients and lawyers in the U.S. these days and I would hate to see such a team nail Dr. Hsu & Company. (They might provide some "deep pockets".) Hsu Research is not going to be in any trouble, that is why they added the disclaimer to the forum that they are not responsible for third party comments.
I can see your point on copyright, but it's an internet forum after all. People quote and reference reviews and papers all the time without consent from the author. Since it is done very informally, no one really is interested in pursuing legal action.

I like to play devil's advocate from time to time, so here goes:
This is just my experience, but I've enjoyed reading tafguy's looong quotes. I don't have the time to click through all the links he's posted, and frankly I wouldn't bother because I find to much to read. However, because of his thorough quoting I have enoyed the various opinoins and views offered by the many different authors he has quoted. Personally, I think the best solution to satisfy both a reasonable request of copyright and the ease of the reader/passage of knowledge in a internet forum is to just add the soure to each quote. Just the name of the author and the magazine as would be posted in the link would suffice I think. Does that bring up the issue that the link itself does legally site the source as required by a copyright? I could be spewing incorrect blah blah, but it makes a little sense to me after a few beers

According to fair use law, I don't think there is any infrigement on copyright laws. Accordnig to Title 17, Chapter 1, Section 107, it is considered fair use if it is not used in a for-profit purpose and whether the portion displayed reflects on the nature of the original.

I wrote a nice response to this but the damn forum editor ate it.
The copyright act you cite is wooly enough that you would probably need a copyright lawyer and a judge to decide what is and isn't copyright infringement. I think had someone written a full employment act for both, they couldn't have done better. Quoting an article in full implicitly violates one of its criteria for fair use, and a clever lawyer might be able to argue violations of some or all of the remaining three. My concern is largely for the poor author who should at least receive credit for his hard work.

Believe me, if the fair use law is no applicable in our case, then the internet as we know it would not exist. It is to prevent for profit entities to selectively deleting a section in a quote (and putting ellipses (....) in place of it) to change the original meaning of the original passage, as we have seen it so blatantly used.
Providing a link to the original source would indicate you are quoting them as a source.

Here are what would be considered fair use and , and what tafguy was doing (I am going to quote them, since how I am using it meets their criteria):
* Criticism and comment -- for example, quoting or excerpting a work in a review or criticism for purposes of illustration or comment. His excepts are used as illustration on what he thinks is important, especially given his brief comment on the subject. * News reporting -- for example, summarizing an address or article, with brief quotations, in a news report. Does not apply * Research and scholarship -- for example, quoting a short passage in a scholarly, scientific, or technical work for illustration or clarification of the author's observations. Would apply, except it tafguy is not quoting from a scholarly/scientific/technical document. * Nonprofit educational uses -- for example, photocopying of limited portions of written works by teachers for classroom use. Unless tafguy is excerpting all these quotes to push his private business agenda, this would apply since it is educating many of the people who shows a interest in the subject. * Parody -- that is, a work that ridicules another, usually well-known, work by imitating it in a comic way. Does not apply here. So it his quotation meets at least one of the criteria. As far as the rules: Rule 1: Are You Creating Something New or Just Copying? Even though he is quoting the majority of it, he is using it to illustrate his point, in effect, he is creating something slightly new. This would imply it is fair use. Rule 2: Are Your Competing With the Source You're Copying From? No, so it falls into fair use. Rule 3: Giving the Author Credit Doesn't Let You Off the Hook So he doesn't give credit to the author, which apparently is irrelevent. Rule 4: The More You Take, the Less Fair Your Use Is Likely to Be That is why tafguy's quoting an excerpt is more likely fair use. Rule 5: The Quality of the Material Used Is as Important as the Quantity Believe me, nothing quoted I've seen is of significance.

I am not and as a layman would interpret the original posts of part II a little differently. With respect to the five rules: they were copied not created, they competed with the paid advertisement on the original web sites, they provided links which did not mitigate the copying, they reproduced the works in full (as more as you can get), and, if you'll pardon my word play, they had an all-encompasing quality. My sincere thanks to both of you for the ongoing debate of fair use but this is no longer an issue because there won't be anymore quotes from me in any thread in this forum. I don't want things getting out of scope of what this thread was originally created. John has raised concern on copyright issues and Lwang has taken part in my defense. And I heard all of this loud and clear and have personally taken action to rectify the problems. Now, whether or not who is right is surely something to know but I don't want to be in the shoes of that person if copyright laws do not fall in his favor.

Believe me, there are many forums out there whose existence seem to be quoting an entire article for the sole purpose of educating the public, on articles, leaked documents, etc. Those would be the first to be shut down and non have been so far. There are instances where proprietary information are put out in the public and controversy arises, but if it is for the public's interest, then they don't have a case.
Anyway, it is best for you to paraphrase or write a summary of what you thought was important in the links you provided instead of directly quoting it.

Nowadays, technological advancements keep changing for the better to meet tomorrow's demands. We are right in area of digital technology, exploitation of digital allows gain in speed and time while ensuring data flow error free from component to an another , at least with specifically designed equipment. In fact, it is pretty much proven in computer fields with these powerful connector cables as we used to know as USB and Firewire. The other day, I read a review in the AVguide Monthly SEPTEMBER 2005 issue on the latest Sony digital drive amplifier you can download it at below link. And best it is FREE!
There were two things that I found interesting in the review of the Sony STR-DA7100ES Audio/Video Receiver are: 1. i.Link connectivity, aka IEEE1394, which is an advanced digital interface which Sony provided for use with an SACD player equipped with i.Link output. There is no doubt of benefits of i.Link since its allows bigger bandwidth, high resolution audio signal transfer but whether or not it deliver higher signal purity remains to be seen. One big useful thing in this is you need only one digital cable, vs. six analog cables as I do to connect from my Pioneer universal player 578A using its 6 analog outputs to an old Pioneer's decent receiver 509SX equipped with 6 analog inputs. Also not seen its potential use too, that i.Link has two-way communication feature. Using an i.Link or Firewire connectivity, which it claims to maintain a digital signal path between the components as sound may be improved from analog output due to possible jitter caused by digital signal which is saved and restore to ensure probably synchronization of transport. So as I heard but still don't get that milliseconds gap to store and read back is pretty negligible but it looks like with direct link data will be read back with exact timing. 2. A clever breakthrough menu-driven DC PHASE LINEARIZER control to offer what digital amplifier lacks: degree of audible low frequency phase shift. Powerful use of DSP is seen here to enable the receiver to match the phase characteristics of analog amplifier and to bring out more analog-like sound. IMO this is a cool feature for those who invest in the digital gear as voicing options have wider ranges such as transistor-like definition, snap, and sheen to almost tube-like warmth and bass richness. I just wonder what kind of formula DSP were able to reproduce that kind of analog-like-sound? But it seems from the reviewer that they do work beautifully. How to get best bass performance!
Very useful tips from these experts to show the techniques to integrate subwoofer's bass with the sound of main speakers. Through detailed procedures and advises from these experts, depending on one's need, if you decide to follow their instructions, then you will be able to achieve bass that will appear to be coming from main speakers and not from HSU sub. In fact, it is part of good calibration too and how main speakers are leveled with subwoofers. I have to admit that I did not know that old trick to help locate the spot where bass is the smoothest and where volume and clarity as they said should reveal equal in bass notes when music with strong bass line is played.
There are some additional explanations such as it is not recommended not to sit against a wall or why sub should be placed closer as possible to main speakers. I'll let you guys when you have chance to watch it, to appreciate yourself the excellent video transfer and amazing surround effects. Since it is an import and luckily english subtitle is present, I can't help but sacrifying myself for once reading subtitle when it is an import and lack of english audio track. Highly recommended to enjoy incredible directionnal and surround sound.

Ambisonic project!
Interesting article on ambisonic project which deals with the development of spatial audio software components.
I was mostly interested in the software part since one, with the right sound card, can probably can experiment ambisonic technology using VST plug-ins and Plogue Bilule. In fact, with some Ambisonic VST plug-ins, a Plogue Bidule which offers Audio Unit support, and can handle a large number of channel i/o, and a M-Audio FireWire 410 soundcard, they were able to output to eight speakers, which were fed to an HT system. http://www.digenis.co.uk/ambi_au.html Ploque Bidule http://www.plogue.com/

Importance of room acoustics though I don't have any problem with my HT room. But some understandings about physics of room acoustics and the benefits to get better sound that some of these articles explain are pretty good. Check out 6moons article which has also nice drawings.

I still don't understand this equal importance of all parts stuff.
If the source signal is bad, the speakers won't matter. Yet how hard is it to get a CD player that is 99% faithful to the original signal compared to speakers that are? If I used average best buy components, with a normal(not audiophile/placeabo) mentality, and listened to their components in a blind ABX test, I think most if not all people would find no difference between any CD or DVD player of proper design $100 or more. Yet I guarantee every speaker will sound quite different - some like trash, some adequate, and some awesome. You just don't see this dynamic range of quality with other components, which is why IMO the speakers are the most important. Unless you buy a broken or very esoteric CD player, it's not going to audibly effect the signal on anything but test tones at high levels. By theory, if something is wrong with the source, nothing else can fix it. Yet no one ever mentions just how hard it is to get something wrong in such a matured technology.

There is some important view at the beginning of that article that has raised interests to my reading such as the weakest link in the audio chain is only the one which we are least satisfied. Cool sites!
Awesome pictures of custom cabinet! I'm not sure about the quality of sound of those speaker/subwoofer, but those decos are just eye pleasant. The Category Five sports three 12" woofers and three 12" passive radiators. Top glass with coconut lightning is cute!

Articles on a/v calibration!
Check out the calibration tools for those who do not know how to calibrate or need to learn how to with interactive video guide. I personally like the AVIA test tones and the well organized setup section though the limit is only DD 5.1. Above that, you need Digital Video Essentials.
But for those who own the receiver that have built in calibration feature won't need it but may not be able to measure the loudness of sound at the level of the receiver's volume at will as the RS SPL meter came handy to test and reverify setup.
