I received my stf-2 yesterday and tried to hook it up to my emotiva lmc-1. I followed all the rules (save the sub setup command because my emotiva didn't seem to respond to it), was ready for awesome bass, and got just a hum - anyone have suggestions about what to try next?

What exactly do you mean by this?

Which source are you using, and how is it connected?

Glancing at the Emotiva LMC-1 manual, it is very insistent that you must set the front speakers to Small to have output to the sub, especially for analog and PCM sources. You must set the Subwoofer setting to Yes to have LFE output to the sub.

There is a Noise Test under the Function Menu. When you try this on the sub, do you still hear only hum?

I'll try to answer both questions - but Pete I guess as a layman I'm not quite sure what you're asking. Bob, all speakers - main, center, and back are set to small. I, for the life of me, can not find the menu setting that will allow me to say "subwoofer - yes". I can get to the subwoofer menu setting, but every button I push just brings the word "sub" back or exits me out of that setting or function. The LMC-1 should let me do all this in OSD, but I've also never been able to get my TV/Emotiva to do the OSD thing Maybe I'm just not smart enough to figure it out - got any engineers for hire? More suggestions?

The manual suggests that all the setup can be done via the front panel, but beyond that it is very unclear as all the directions walk you through the OSD process. So simplest would seem to be to make the OSD work, then use it to make sure the sub is turned on.

I'm assuming you have the sub plugged into the correct SW port. It's conceivable it could sense there was no plug connected and not let you enable the sub, but I've not heard of receivers doing that.

Have you tried contacting Emotiva support at av123 to see if they have any suggestions? A quick google search does not give any suggestions what would cause the OSD not to work.

What I mean is, if you look on the back of the subwoofer amplifier, where is the crossover switch set at ('Out' or 'In'), how high is the volume knob, where is the On/Off/Auto switch set to, etc. Presumably you are connecting the subwoofer using one subwoofer interconnect running from the [7.1 multichannel] subwoofer output on the Emo preamp to the subwoofer input on the subwoofer, correct?

My recommendation is this: On the Emp preamp, set all speakers to 'Small' with 80Hz crossover for all speakers/subwoofer, and set channel level to +0db for all speakers/subwoofer. On the subwoofer amplifier, set crossover switch to 'Out', volume knob to ~ 11 o'clock, On/Off/Auto switch to 'Auto'. Play a music CD with some mid-bass and deep bass content. Make sure that the LED on the sub amp turns green.

I found the lpm-1 manual on-line at the Emotiva site.
The set-up will be much easier if you can access the OSD. you should be able to do this by pressing the "menu" button on the remote.
If this doesn't work, I'd contact Tech Support at Emotiva for help.

Once you get into the main menu, you want to select the "Function" menu.
one of the items there is "Speaker Configuration" . Select that.that's where you will want to select "yes" for subwoofer.
