AVR volume

I have hsu 5.1 pkg with vt15 sub
Onkyo 809 AVR

I notice when movie and music is really cranked, volume is almost at Max....

If hsu are so efficient, why is it taking such Max volume to achieve such levels?

Thank you..

When you say volume is at max, are you talking about the gain knob on the back of the sub?
