VTF2-Mk5 integration problems

Hello, I have a VTF2-Mk3 sub that had the power plate fail on. Hsu sent me a VTF2-Mk5 amp that was compatible. Previously, the integration was quite good. It is terrible now. My mains are good down to 43 Hz, which is where I am crossing it over. Hard to tell exactly what is wrong, but it seems that the power plate is spilling over higher frequencies. Turning down the volume does not solve the problem. Although all the bass is there, it sounds unlistenable I have just shut it off. Wondering where to go from here. Any suggestions are appreciated.

First of all, just because your mains can go down to 43Hz does not mean that will be the optimal crossover point. You might want to try a higher crossover, maybe 80 Hz. The other question is, how are you managing your crossover? Are you utilizing a receiver or are you just setting it on the sub? I would highly recommend using a receiver. If this is not an option, or even if that is what you are doing, invest in a mini DSP so you can really dig in and control the sub frequencies. Buy it with the UMIK-2 mic so you can identify the problem frequencies and tone them down. You can also adjust delay and phase which might help merge your sound. Good luck!

What input are you using on the subwoofer?

Have you confirmed that you have the internal wiring correct?

Have you confirmed that you have the external wiring correct and the same as before?

Are all switches set to the same values as they were before?

Is the subwoofer in the same physical location and orientation as before?

From what I can tell the MK5 amplifier has a Q control whereas the MK3 did not. Once you have confirmed everything is as before, I would spend my time changing the Q value and see if it gets you back to a happy place.

You may also need to adjust the volume and crossover frequency dials. Just because visually they are in the same place as before they may not be at the same as before values or optimal values for you.

Do you know if the crossover slope in the MK3 and MK5 amplifier are the same?

My guess is that the circuit design of the amp have changed from MK3 to MK5 so you may not be able to get things to sound exactly as they before.

Lastly there is also a small possibility that the new amp has a problem of some sort.

Have you listened to the sub by itself? You may have some phase and timing issues going on. Try switching the phase to 180 and then play around with different distance settings in your receiver. If you have a mic and REW you can really get this dialed in better. Regardless of the ability of your mains to play lower, you should really keep your crossover up around 80 Hz.
