Lots of toe-in, but how much, exactly?
How much toe-in is recommended for HB-1 MK2s? I know, I know… experiment. That said, Hsu suggests more toe-in than is typical, and most reviews affirm this. But how much, exactly?
My speakers are toed-in. My listening position is about 8.5 feet away, and my speakers are placed 8 feet apart. From where I sit - with grill covers removed - the amount of far speaker side visible equals - bear with me here! - the width of the vertical part of the black tweeter surround (just the inner "raised" part; not the flush perimeter with the mounting screws). Got the picture? Put another way, if I extend a straight line from the drivers towards the listening position, they intersect about 15" in front of my head. Is that enough, or should I toe them in further? Thanks! |

My memory may be faulty about this, but when I visited the Hsu Research audition room in 2014 (twice), I don't recall the toe-in of the speakers as being noticeably extreme. In fact, I don't remember a toe-in at all, but maybe that's because I didn't notice it to be significant. As you acknowledge, you should experiment. Maybe you can get your significant-other to adjust the speakers while you sit and listen. However, what you're already doing is probably fine, and I'm skeptical that small changes will make much of an audible difference.

Best thing IS to just experiment. The speakers are light enough to move easily. When I had my HB-1 Mk2's, the toe-in was such that they crossed maybe about 6" or so in front of my face, maybe a little less. I would think 15" is a bit much. Using the toe-in I mentioned, I was very happy with the imaging and soundstage.
I listened to the speakers at Hsu's headquarters and don't recall any extreme toe-in in that room. Sure sounded good. |

For me, I feel like having them crossover about 6"-1' in front of my face provides better imaging
