Question Why Spikes?

The standard recommendation on this site is to put a throw rug under the VTFs, and to put rubber cups under the spikes to keep them from drilling to China. All of that being the case, why put "spikes" on the VTFs at all? Why not put fairly hard rubber feet? The "Products" page touts the brass spikes as features, implying some benefit.

Rob Babcock is on a distinguished road
Rubber feet are good on hardwood, to prevent damage, but spikes work better on carpet. Rubber feet would probably work, too, but won't couple your sub solidly to the floor like spikes.

Then why the recommendation to put a throw rug under the down-firing sub and then to put rubber cups under the spikes?

I don't know why I put this on the Ventriloquist Page.
