Data-Bass.com, Hsu Research VTF-15H review

Phenomenal job by Josh Ricci:

http://www.data-bass.com/data?page=system&id=100

And a great read for all VTF-15H owners or any Hsu Research product owner for that matter....

Now it will probably silence some of the bashing and people will finally know what most of us owners already knew that its a great sub.

Ricci's measurements compared to Hsu's

Confirmed Hsu's own measurements where correct to begin with despite of all the scrutiny and controversy the Audioholics review stirred.

It's tragic such a big deal had to be made out of small differences in measurements.
To my knowledge (I haven't actually read any technical literature on the subject), no uncertainty analysis or study of confounding variables went into the development of the CEA 2010 standard testing procedure. It may be the case that measurement variance of +/- 2 dB is the best that can be achieved without making testing exorbitantly expensive. That said, the information CEA 2010 provides is way more useful then what the vast majority of speaker vendors provide.

If one chooses to buy one brand of sub over another because it measured only 2 dB higher in the CEA 2010, there is little assurance that the chosen sub will perform better for the buyer than the alternative.

Also, I think Dr. Hsu's argument about the VTF-15H having less dynamic compression than the other subs is a seriously underrated point. Loudness and sound level are not the same thing. Unless the system is being severely overdriven, the sub will spend way more time at playing at 105 dB and even 110 dB than blasting at 115 dB, and under these circumstances, a sub with less dynamic compression will provide more definition and detail. It may actually sound *louder*.
