Hi, I was wondering if anyone here has had experience refoaming an older Hsu woofer. I talked to someone in sales via email, and they said to use a softer foam, but I can't seem to find one around the net that specifies the rigidity. I know I could replace the woofer entirely, but that would really stretch my expendable money a bit too far.

I have had experience refoaming before, and I am honestly a fan of shimming the voice coil for the process (one mistake out of six refoams is enough for me). Is there a way I can get info on the gap size so I can shim properly?

The behavior of the woofer seems typical of one that needs new foam. The material itself is soft and brittle, the woofer over travels at intermediate to high volume, and at various frequencies the surround flaps. On top of this, the sub is old, and there is sign of wear on the surround.

Is the new woofer significantly better?

The replacement woofer is much better than the original. It has a rubber surround (no more worries about deteriorating foam), magnet is three times larger, longer excursion.

If I get a replacement woofer, will I have to change anything else? I still have the original amplifier (150 Watt Hsu) and I noticed the newer woofers handle significantly more power. Will the tuning and air flow through the port be an issue?

You don't need to do anything else. The woofer will be able to handle more power, but due to the small port, increasing the amplifier power will not be beneficial for the low bass (limited by port noise), but would help for bass above 30 Hz.

I have decided to forgo refoaming this woofer for now and follow through with replacing the woofer. How much does the replacement cost? Where can I purchase it from?

Is this the same 12" from the vtf series and does it carry the same warranty?

The model is HRSW12V, I believe it is one of the oldest hsu models. It has a single flared port
