HB-1 mk2 with tubes?

I have a nice tube amp with 30 - 35 ish wpc and am having a hard time finding full range speakers in my price range that sound how I like.

I hate forward, bright highs. I like my highs to be soft but detailed, smooth mids and really, really good bass.

My music tastes are very eclectic. Ranging from Celtic and female vocals to blues, rock, techno and even dubstep.

How would the HB-1 mk2 with a HSU sub sound with my tubes amp? Im currently using a Dared SL-2000a tube pre-amp as well but I imagine I would need to swap for a modern solid state pre-amp with a dedicated subwoofer out for this setup correct?

Hi echarlie,

We've had some people use the HB-1 MK2 with tube amplifiers with good results. I'd say it is certainly worth trying out! And when used with a nice true subwoofer, one will get good full range sound.

Sincerely,

Was hoping maybe a member or two running these with tubes would be able to provide some actual experiences but thank you Dr.

I did read in the stereomojo review of the HB-1 MK2 said that you may have to use the 4 ohm tap for these instead of the 8. My amp is currently set for 8 ohm but I do have 4 ohm taps. Which would be best if I wanted to get a pair for the 30 day trial?

Hi echarlie,

Here is the response I got from Dr. Hsu:

4 ohm tap will be a bit more accurate (lower output impedance), but the system will probably play a bit louder with the 8 ohm tap, and the 8 ohms tap will be more 'tubey' sounding
