I suggest reading the manual of your receiver/preamp to see which setting is correct for the sub level. What receiver/preamp do you have?
As to the volume of the sub relative to the speakers, I currently run my subs about 3dB hot. The SPL meter says same level for speakers and sub, but the SPL meter gives low readings, by an average of 3dB, for the subwoofer tones. Thus, if you read the same SPL on the sub as you do for your other speakers, then you are already running about 3dB hot. For me, this worked out to be the right volume level; for you, it might not. The best way to dial it in (after doing the SPL check) is to get to where you don't actually hear the sub when playing music; this may take some fine tuning. However, if you turn the sub off, then you should notice something missing. When you get to where the sub does not draw any attention to itself in music, but shakes the house in movies, you have found the "perfect" setting, IMHO. Sorny

1) Start with the receiver at 0 db for the subwoofer, and the subwoofers amp volume knob matched by ear.
2) Fine tune the level on the receiver, since many receivers let you set the subwoofer level by remote control. You can sit in your chair. 3) Once matched, you can then adjust the level up or down, depending on your listening preferences. In general, most people prefer the sub a little louder, but it is a matter of preference. |

I have tried many ways to dial in my VTF-3R and all the above information works. I had to make sure that the crossover point was matched (mine is 80HZ) to prevent doubling up on the bass. I can't imagine a finer sounding sub for music, even with floorstanders (Dynaudio 70s). Thank you Dr. Hsu for a product that has given me such listening pleasure. BTW, I prefer to set the SPL of the sub 4 dB less than the fronts for 2 channel + sub listening, since at that point it matches the bass level of my front two when the sub is off and the fronts are on full range(just deeper), and the sub effectively disappears. Let us know what you end up with! Good listening!
